Guide to the breed of cat with all-black fur
Sadly, there are superstitions and folklore that follow the poor little black kitty to the point many of these fur babies find themselves in shelters or meeting terrible fates. These are not a breed in their own right. Still, there are 22 breeds of cats that develop in many colors, including that of an entirely black fur.
These are not unusual animals, although they might be a challenge to find. More commonly, when the average person looks for an all-black cat, you’ll find a white patch somewhere on the kitty or even just a couple of white hairs.
The All-Black Kitty And The Tall-Tales That Follow Her
Despite the beauty of an all-black cat, some tall-tales follow the kitty indicating she is bad luck. While the majestic beauty eludes mystery, shows as almost magical, the superstitions are self-imposed and are contradictory because some people fully believe the animal brings good fortune.
The Japanese and British people feel that a cat with this coloring crossing in front of a person’s pathway means good fortune will come to that individual, that it’s a good omen. In the United States and Germany, they believe it to be a bad omen.
The animal had reverence in ancient Rome and Egypt, where the death of a kitty had the same impact as people. The animals became ultimately mummified, and families grieved as they would for the members of their family.
Unfortunately, in time cats became feared as a part of witchcraft or even the devil, with the animal sacrificed by fire on “Shrove Tuesday” as a form of protection from catastrophes or natural disasters. These superstitions follow the cats today, and many, unfortunately, meet gruesome ends at the hands of people who believe this folklore.
Superstitions Still Follow These Lovely Creatures Today
There are still tales created and followed to this day. Each that you hear is different from the other. People either genuinely love these incredible animals, or they sadly despise the pleasant creatures, with some of the cats receiving death sentences for crimes they didn’t commit. Superstitions following them include:
** You Will Meet Good Fortune Or Have Good Luck If A Black Cat:
- Rests on your front porch
- Comes upon you, three in a row
- Greets you at your door
- Comes into your home
- Finds herself hosted by you within your home
The kitties were welcome additions on ships because the crew found them to be good omens for luck and fortune, plus they took care of the ship’s pests.

There is another rare breed known as the Ojos Azules. The coat can be any number of naturally dark colors that can include black. Still, what is unique about this cat is the dark blue eyes. Usually, blue eyes have an association with fully grown cats of a paler color or when a dark cat is newly born. As the kitten grows into adulthood, the eyes change color. That’s not the case with the Ojos Azules. The eyes remain dark blue throughout this rare beauty’s lifetime.
If you don’t like a particular animal because of your beliefs, please don’t harm the animal. See here how these cats make good pets.
It would be humane to take it to a shelter or a rescue facility where the staff will be able to bring it to a loving home with a family who doesn’t share quite the same traditions.
