A police rank, Constable 21282 Kevin Morgan, was shocked to discover a baby boy, later understood to be just 9 months old, resting on the ground in front of the Baramita station where he worked, in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

Sensing that the child was abandoned, the policeman immediately took the child in and with the assistance of the Subordinate Officer-in-Charge of the Station, Corporal 15421 Jennifer Griffith and other ranks, they pooled their personal cash together, and was able to buy pampers and clothing for the baby, who was practically naked.

They continued to offer parental care including comforting and putting the child to sleep, until health and other authorities could have stepped in.

Residents have since commended the police ranks for showing the softer and sympathetic side of the Guyana Police Force, and for putting the interest of the child first by going beyond their call of duty.

The child was subsequently handed over to the medical staff at the Baramita Health Centre.

It is understood that several hours later, and while the police was trying to track down the parents of the abandoned child, a 23-year-old young woman showed up and told the police that she was too drunk the night to take care of the child and must have probably given the baby to a stranger, since she cannot recall who the baby was given to.

She was promptly arrested and placed in custody, pending further investigations.
