Guyana: Bomb toting Sindicato gang members remanded to jail
By Allan Watkins From Guyana Guardian
Luis Gonsalves and Daniel Contreras both 27-year-old were separately charged for having two live grenades in their possession when they appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus for grenade and ammunition charges.
It is alleged that on January 17, 2019 at Mode Hill, Cuyuni River without being holders of firearm licenses the two had in their possession the explosive weapons.
The men had allegedly claimed ownership of the grenades.
Police Prosecutor Quinn Harris said that on the day in question, ranks from the joint service were on water patrol along the Cuyuni River when they saw a boat with several passengers.
When the boat was intercepted, police found Gonsalves and Contreras with a grenade each hidden in their crotch area.
Harris told the court that Gonsalves is the second in command of the Sindicato gang while Contreras is a senior member.
With the use of an interpreter, they were given the grenade to keep while on the boat by an unknown person and threatened that if they did not comply their families would be hurt.
The Magistrate after listening to the two men entered a not guilty plea on their behalf. Gonsalves and Contreras were remanded to prison until March 18 at the Kamarang Magistrates Court.
