Guyana: ’Choke and Rob’ allegations leveled against GTT

By Wonita Stephens From Guyana Guardian

Customers service representatives at GTT are telling disgruntled persons who are using their MMG facility that there is a problem with the service and technicians are working to fix it. But several affected customers are saying that the foreign-owned telecommunications service provider is practically engaged in a scheme that is designed to ”choke and rob” Guyanese customers.

The Mobile Money (MMG) service is intended to facilitate the easy payment for various enlisted services after depositing the coverage amount. But in recent times, the service has been supposedly inundated with various forms of issues, ranging from the unexplained disappearance of customer’s deposits, to unauthorized deduction of monies from their MMG accounts.

However, the company through its customer service reps are saying that it is the vendors to be blamed for the missing monies.

According to one supervisor at GTT, some of the issues that are being experienced by MMG customers are probably as a result of dishonesty on the part of vendors. But an independent investigation by this publication, and the experience of several persons has proven otherwise.

In one case, it was discovered that after purchasing the MMG even from a GTT flagship store, no money was deposited into the customer’s account, even though a confirmation text from the company indicates that the money was supposedly deposited.

In three other instances, the same situation occurred when the MMG credit was purchased from different independent MMG vendors which was confirmed via a message from the network, that the monies were deposited. But again, no MMG credit was actually in the customer’s accounts.

Calls to GTT customer support in all cases were greeted with promises to investigate each matter. As a matter of fact, the company staffs have confirmed that the monies were never deposited because of the supposed malfunctioning of GTT’s MMG network; – an issue which the company has been trying to fix for at least over a week now.

Even so, there has been no formal announcement from GTT in relation to this issue, neither was any notification sent to the thousands of affected customers.

Nonetheless, those that are currently deprived of their monies are calling on the telecommunications service provider to refund them their cash forthwith, and for the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to look into the issue with some degree of urgency.
