Guyana: Officer in $5 million bribe scandal buys $8 million Audi, takes vacation
The commissioner stated that when the senior officer returns from that leave, the police force will investigate the matter and cause the said officer to be questioned.
The officer is being accused of taking a five million dollar bribe to destroy critical evidence relating to the Subryanville hotel killing of Jason De Florimonte, for which the murder accuse Erwin Bacchus is now languishing in jail awaiting trial.
While the DPP is looking into the matter, the commissioner explained that an official complaint was not yet submitted to him.
The officer, who once served as the Head of the Major Crimes Unit, but was removed from that unit after certain revelations were made during the Paule Slowe Inquiry last year was assigned to a city police station (sub-division).
He is accused of wiping several DVR’s that had recorded the murder incident, for an on behalf of the murder accuse Erwin Bacchus, who owns the hotel where the shooting took place.
It is further alleged that he deliberately ensure that evidence that was available from other DVR’s in the are not taken into account or shared with the DPP and other investigators.
Obviously disturbed by this, Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Williams who shared the table with the Commissioner during a press conference emphasize that with dozens of cameras in the area, for some reason evidence from none of them were submitted.
Several other officers within the force have also expressed dismay that the accused officer could have suddenly afforded to buy an Audi Q series vehicle which is currently being sold for some $8 million dollars.
Considering his salary scale, several sources told this publication that it is almost impossible for the officer to buy such a luxury SUV with his paycheck, which is pegged at around $1.4 million or thereabout per year.
