Guyana police living in pig-pen conditions at Brickdam Station
Several police ranks who are currently calling the living quarters at Brickdam their home for the next few days, as part of the security processes for the local government elections, are complaining that they are being forced to live in pig-pen conditions at the city’s Divisional Headquarters.
While some had taken to Facebook, others reached out directly to the media to voice their concerns, since their superiors are allegedly foot-dragging on making proper accommodation requirements.
Several ranks who reached out to the Guyana Guardian, but express their desire to remain anonymous for fear of victimization, explained that even though the living conditions for the female and senior ranks of the Police Force are acceptable, the junior male ranks at Brickdam are forced to occupy their quarters which less than deplorable.
It was explained that there is no running water, no proper washroom facilities and no proper sleeping areas for the junior male ranks. This publication was further told that the junior ranks are not afforded a kitchen to prepare any meals. Instead, they are forced to wait for food from the Officer’s Mess, without consideration for ranks whose religious, health, or personal situations require that they avoid certain types of food. By comparison, the female ranks are reportedly facilitated with a kitchen, running water washroom and all the amenities that the men are not afforded. They have much better sleeping areas and even a sitting area.
This news outfit was further told that many Police ranks have been disgruntled about their living conditions at Brickdam for some time now but their concerns were heightened with the pending Local Government Elections and the fact that they would be required to remain in-line for a certain period.
The ranks also claimed that the Commander of A division Mr Marlon Chapman has been repeatedly appraised about the situation but is allegedly turning a proverbial blind eye to the matter. After all, they pointed out to the fact that he does not have to sleep there.
The disgruntled ranks are now calling on Minister of Public Security, and the Commissioner of Police to urgently look into what they termed as a “humanity and occupational crisis” at the Brickdam Police Station.
