Guyana: Woman dies in fire set by robbers
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Jan. 3, CMC – The police have launched a probe into an incident in which woman was burned alive early Sunday after robbers set her home on fire as they fled the scene.
The police report that the robbers broke into the house occupied by Anita Baichan, 49, and her son Moshim Khan, 28, in West Coast Berbice shortly after 2:00 am (local time).
Initial investigations reveled that two men armed with machetes entered Baichan’s home and demanded cash and jewelry.
The were reportedly given GUY$30,000 and demanded more valuables.
When their demand was not met, the men used duct tape to tie the hands, feet and mouth of the victims and then set the house on fire before escaping.
Khan managed to rolled out of the building, but efforts to save his mother failed.
He has since been hospitalised.
