Guyanese father kills daughter and niece – is arrested in New York
By Dennis Adonis From Guyana Guardian
A Guyanese man, who is accused of killing his teenage daughter and his teenage niece in an apartment at Highland Springs, Virginia on Thursday last, has been captured by US Marshalls with the assistance of the New York State police, after being on the run for almost a week.
He was arrested yesterday morning in Queens, New York, while making flight arrangements to return to Guyana.
The man 39-year-old Guyanese, Abdool Zaman, who was staying in Florida prior to the killing, is suspected to have travelled to Virginia where he met and killed his 18-year-old daughter Vanessa Zaman, and his niece of the same age, Leona Samlall, after a family disagreement last Thursday.
The two teens who were staying with Mr Zaman’s mother and stepfather, were killed after the irate Guyanese man pumped several bullets into their bodies. it is understood that Leona is the step-niece of the killer, since the young woman’s mother is involved in a relationship with Mr Zaman’s brother.
However, investigators are not yet clear as to what could have caused the man to murder the two young women, one of whom has been described as a school drop-out, who has been on a missing person list for the past two years.
Unfortunately, law enforcement authorities only found her when she was already dead.
Investigations into the double murder are still in progress, and charges are likely to be laid soon.
