The new six-part miniseries “Show Me a Hero” makes its debut

HBO commemorates Emancipation Day

Miami, FL – July 30, 2015 – August will be an exhilarating month on HBO in the Caribbean, with a brand-new miniseries premiere, the return of a fan favorite, three season finales, and an extensive movie lineup.

Based on the nonfiction book of the same name and created by David Simon (HBO’s “Treme” and “The Wire”), Show Me a Hero will debut its first two episodes on Sunday, August 16th at 20:00 hrs. AST* in the Caribbean, simultaneously with the United States. Directed by Paul Haggis and written by David Simon and William F. Zorzi, the six-part miniseries explores notions of home, race and community through the lives of elected officials, bureaucrats, activists and ordinary citizens in Yonkers, New York, in the late 80s and early 90s.

In an America that’s now generations removed from the greatest civil rights struggles of the 1960s, the young mayor (Oscar Isaac) of a mid-sized American city is faced with a federal court order that says he must build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town. The series also stars Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, LaTanya Richardson-Jackson, Bob Balaban and Jim Belushi.

The critically acclaimed drama Masters of Sex premieres Friday, August 28th at 20 hrs. in the Caribbean. Dr. Bill Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) have a passion for researching human sexuality in the midst of a society that condemns and rejects any matter relating to the “taboo” topic. The idea of developing a study on the psychological effects of sex is stigmatized by the academic community. However, the desire to experience and practice the most diverse sexual theories, even among each other, leads to publishing their knowledge in a book, generating a whole revolution in the medical community, society and among themselves.

This season, set in 1965-1966, the work of Dr. Masters and Virginia shifts from data collection to actually helping others who are suffering. Composed of 12 episodes, the Golden Globe® nominated series also features performances by Caitlin Fitzgerald, Annaleigh Ashford and Josh Charles, among others. Created by Michelle Ashford, who also serves as an executive producer of the series, with Thomas Maier and Michael Sheen as producers.

HOLLYWOOD MOVIES

Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow (Saturday, August 1st at 21 hrs.) follows Major William Cage (Tom Cruise), assigned to a suicide mission. Though he’s killed in combat, he finds himself thrown into a time loop, reliving the same fight over and over. His fighting skills improve more each time with the help of comrade Sgt. Rita Rose Vrataski (Emily Blunt), as they continue seeking a way to defeat extraterrestrial invaders.

Starring Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon, The Hundred-Foot Journey (Saturday, August 8th at 21 hrs.) is a comedy-drama about a feud between two adjacent restaurants in a French town: one operated by a recently relocated Indian family and the other a Michelin-starred restaurant. Based on the book of the same name, directed by Lasse Hallstrom and produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey.

A Walk Among the Tombstones (Saturday, August 15th at 21 hrs.) stars Liam Neeson as Matt Scudder, a former NYPD officer who now works as an unlicensed private detective, hired by drug trafficker (Dan Stevens) whose wife was kidnapped and murdered. Scudder uncovers the crime sequence and races through the streets to catch the killers, blurring the lines of law and crime.

Directed by Gary Shore and Andy Cockrum, Dracula Untold (Saturday, August 22nd at 21 hrs.) takes place in 15th century Transylvania, where Vlad III (Luke Evans) protects his people and his wife (Sarah Gadon) from the Ottoman Empire. He makes a risky deal when Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper) demands 1,000 of the country’s boys, including Vlad’s son, to join his army.

The Boxtrolls (Saturday, August 29th at 21 hrs.) tells the story of Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), an orphan who lives in a community with quirky, mischievous creatures called Boxtrolls. When a villain threatens their existence, Eggs hatches a plan to save his friends with the help of the feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning). Also featuring the voices of Ben Kingsley (Archibald Snatcher), Jared Harris (Lord Portley-Rind) and more, The Boxtrolls is based on the children’s novel ‘Here Be Monsters’ by Alan Snow.

EMANCIPATION DAY: AUGUST 1ST

In honor of Emancipation Day, HBO will air related programming throughout the day on Saturday, August 1st, with inspiring Hollywood films to commemorate and celebrate:

Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom (9:45 hrs.) is based on Nelson Mandela’s autobiographical book. Starring Idris Elba as Mandela and Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela, it chronicles the leader’s life before becoming President of South Africa and his work to rebuild the country’s once segregated society.

Featuring Queen Latifah as legendary blues singer Bessie Smith, Bessie (12:15 hrs.) tells her story of transformation from a struggling young singer to becoming “The Empress of the Blues.” The HBO original film also stars Michael Kenneth Williams (HBO’s “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire”, Mo’Nique and Khandi Alexander (HBO’s “Treme”).

12 Years a Slave (14:15 hrs.) tells the true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York who is abducted and sold into slavery in pre-Civil War United States. Also starring Michael Fassbender as a cruel slave owner and Brad Pitt as a Canadian abolitionist, the movie depicts Northrup’s 12-year odyssey and struggle for survival.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler (16:30 hrs.), loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, chronicles the life of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), a White House butler who served a 34-year tenure under several U.S. presidents. He is a passive witness the American Civil Rights Movement, and as his family faces its own struggles, Cecil ponders how he should take action. Oprah Winfrey also stars as Gloria, Cecil’s wife.

Django Unchained (23:00 hrs.) stars Jaime Foxx as Django, a freed slave working as a bounty hunter with Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to find the South’s most wanted criminals. Set two years before the Civil War, their missions take them to Calvin Candie’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) plantation, where Django’s finds his long-lost wife (Kerry Washington) and begins the uphill mission to save her. Directed by Quentin Tarantino.

SEASON FINALES

Season two of True Detective comes to an end on Sunday, August 9 at 21 hrs. Throughout a season full of surprises, three police officers and a career criminal were caught in a web of conspiracy as a result of a murder. Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn star.

Get ready for back-to-back season finales on Sunday, August 23rd at 22 hrs. with two original comedies: Ballers, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as former football superstar Spencer Strasmore with his millionaire sports business; and The Brink, an inside look at political leaders on the brink of a world war, starring Jack Black and Tim Robbins.
