Head teacher branded ‘hypocrite’ for arranging trip to Caribbean in term time
Furious parents have labelled a headteacher a ‘hypocrite’ after she made plans to fly off to the Caribbean during term time – when they would be fined for doing the same.
Jenny Winder, 53, will fly out to the Caribbean in January shortly after the end of the Christmas holidays after the trip was given the go-ahead by governors at Elstow School, near Bedford.
But parents of children at the school, who are reminded on its website only to book holidays outside of the term-time, have reacted with anger to the news, calling the head’s behaviour ‘arrogant’.
‘It is disgraceful. [Mrs Winder] is a hypocrite,’ one mother, who asked not to be named, told MailOnline.

‘We can’t take holidays in term-time so why should she? The school is fast enough threatening parents with fines if they take their children out.’
‘It is one rule for one and one for another,’ a father added.
‘She shouldn’t have been allowed to go … Teachers’ holidays are long enough … this is arrogant.’
Measures brought in by Michael Gove last year prohibited children from taking time off school apart form in ‘exceptional circumstances’.
Families face a £60 fine per parent per child for unauthorised absences, but have repeatedly complained of the premiums added by holiday companies during the holidays.
Chairman of the governors Kevin Hunter said Mrs Winder was ‘devoted, well-liked, extremely hard-working and effective’.
‘She made a request for a week off during term-time for personal reasons which we have judged to be appropriate,’ he said.
