Experts agree that natural remedies can often trump pharmaceutical drugs in the treatment of many ailments. Heart disease, diabetes and arthritis may benefit from using the healing herbs of the Bible that have been around for thousands of years and have tried-and-true benefits without the nasty side effects on many prescribed medications.

Suzy Cohen, RPh., also known as “America’s Pharmacist,” and author of “Drug Muggers,” tells Newsmax:

“I am keenly aware we need many medications and some have tremendous value. I credit some with saving lives. I’ve also come to realize the all the healing compounds we need to survive, and thrive, are actually present in natural herbs and spices.

“Pharma companies just take those herbs and spices and chemically adjust them to create a patentable compound. But this raises the question: What is wrong with the original?

“Before pharmaceuticals were patented, we had plants growing all over the planet that could help us with any ailment,” she adds. “We’ve simply forgotten about the healing power of these plants. After researching medications, herbs, essential oils and spices for more than two decades, I’ve noticed the similarities. You can really heal with God’s plants.”

Here are eight healing herbs from the Bible:

  1. Black cumin. Cohen says in Medicinal Plants from the Bible that the jet-black seeds of this herb can be used to flavor breads and other baked goods. It helps with neurological problems such as seizures.
  2. Garlic. Garlic has been scientifically found to support cardiovascular health by acting as a blood thinner and also helping to remove plaque from the arteries. “It can inhibit Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) acting similarly to the drugs lisinopril and enalapril,” says the pharmacist.
  3. Saffron. Saffron acts like an antidepressant, says Cohen, and a sedative. “It contains biologically active compounds which protect your levels of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.”
  4. Sage. Cohen says that this herb has been studied with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s patients and researchers concluded that sage “produced a significantly better outcome on cognitive function.”
  5. Cinnamon. Cinnamon has been used medicinally for thousands of years, says the late Dr. James Duke, who was an economic botanist at the USDA for 27 years, and wrote “Herbs of the Bible” and “The Green Pharmacy.” He says it helps prevent infection and indigestion. According to Healthline researchers have discovered that it may also help lower blood sugar and fight diabetes by imitating the effects of insulin and increasing blood glucose transport into cells.
  6. Flax. This powerful herb contains alpha-linoleic acid or ALA, which Duke says slows blood clotting and reduces inflammation this easing colitis, arthritis and gastritis. “It also retards and prevents the growth of tumors and boost the immune system,” he says. “The lignans in flaxseed are particularly useful in preventing breast and colon cancers.”
  7. Onion. This member of the Allium family is much richer in cancer-fighting quercetin than garlic, says Duke. “Quercetin inhibits the growth of cancer cells in breast, colon, intestinal and ovarian tumors as well as leukemia. I add both garlic and onions to all of my soups and most of my salads, hoping to stave off cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.”
  8. Willow. Willow is the herbalist’s aspirin. Brewed in a tea, the leaves help reduce arthritis pain, alleviate cold symptoms and help treat headaches, says Duke.
