Justice Minister Helen McEntee has responded to the unprecedented move from the US Embassy in Dublin to issue urgent crime and personal safety advice to their citizens arriving here this summer.
The warning from the Americans comes as one of their citizens remains in hospital after a brutal attack on him in Dublin city centre last week left him with life-changing injuries.
Ms McEntee said: “The Embassy have updated their information and what information they give to their citizens around their travelling, around their security, around their safety.
“This is following a number of incidents and I need to be clear, it’s not ok what happened last week to an American citizen.
But a number of incidents have also happened in recent weeks….. Irrespective of where they’re from, such violence on our streets is not ok, it shouldn’t be tolerated.
“We are still Level One (safety assessment level) and it’s important to stress that, the same as any other Member State across Europe.
“But that’s not to diminish the concerns that people have at the moment.
“I still fully believe that Dublin is a safe place, but there are issues, there are very clear issues we need to deal with.
