History repeats itself (Cayman Football Officiating Team – Concacaf)
From Cherie Branch
(l-r): Dwight Cummings, Ben Whitty & Kedlee Powell
My name is Cherie Branch and I presently serve on the Executive committee for the Cayman Islands Referee Association (CIRA). Amongst the Association, Mr. Livingston Bailey (Head of Referees, Cayman Islands Football Association, CIFA) shared that Cayman is once again manning a full officiating team for upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches. Throughout 2024 (and prior), the football referees, instructors and assessors have continued to make great achievements especially on international arenas. These achievements have gone unsaid and unshared for too long. What makes this a “breaking-the-silence moment” is that the last time Cayman had a full referee team was 20 years ago. Below is the unedited message from Mr. Bailey to the referee body:
Michael Akangou receiving his Concacaf Referee Badge from the Concacaf Refereeing Manager (earlier this year)
On the 20th June 2004 Cayman Islands FIFA Team of Alfredo Whittaker, Noel Williams, Livingston Bailey and Godfrey Bowen officiated in the 2006 World Cup Qualifying Match in Bermuda between El Salvador vs Bermuda. The match was tied 2-2 and we had a terrific game. 20 years later, the Cayman Islands again has a full team of referees to officiate in the 2024 Concacaf Nations League in Barbados in 2 matches. Referees for 1st game USVI vs Bahamas on Saturday 12th October are Ben Whitty, Kedlee Powell, Dwight Cummings and Micheal Akangou. In the 2nd game on Tuesday 15th October, Barbados vs Bahamas, Micheal Akangou will referee his first international game supported by Kedlee Powell, Dwight Cummings and Ben Whitty as Fourth Official. This is fabulous stuff and we are truly proud of our referees.
The Cayman team will be making their way to Barbados on Thursday 10th October 2024. Attached are photos of the gentlemen that were taken at previous 2024 Concacaf events.
