Russian billionaires love Croatia, while the Chinese gamble in Las Vegas and both splash out on private yachts they barely use
Middle Eastern billionaires prefer to spend their summers in the Mediterranean, while Russians head to the Caribbean after Christmas for some winter sun.
A study into the spending habits of the world’s wealthiest businessmen has been produced to discover where they holiday and how they like to travel.
Sardinia, the South of France and the Western Mediterranean are the favourite summer hotspots for billionaires, but Russians prefer to holiday in Croatia and Montenegro, while the Chinese like gambling in Las Vegas.
Travelling in style: The report found that billionaires from emerging countries like splashing out on private yachts but will barely use them
The research, carried out by Ledbury Research for aircraft manufacturer Airbus, also found that Middle Eastern billionaires are the most likely to splash out on a private jet as a status symbol.
Private yachts are also a favourite with wealthy businessmen from the Middle Eastern and Russia, while the Chinese are less interested in watersports, so if they buy a yacht it is more likely to have rooms dedicated to Mah Jong and karaoke.
But despite sinking huge quantities of money in buying a private yacht, billionaires will barely use them.
The report warns: ‘After the interior design of a yacht, billionaires would expect the supplier to be available, spontaneously, years after this to check that everything is in order. Often because it will have been used so infrequently.’
The research, based on information on billionaires from emerging markets and interviews with people who work closely with them, also found that wealthy travellers expect an incredibly high level of service when on holiday.

One interviewee reveals: ‘When billionaires travel they want to retain the ability to have whatever they want, as they do at home. They are used to living in a certain way and they want to continue to do that wherever they are.’
While another adds: ‘When you reach that level of wealth, in China the Middle East and Russia there is much more of a service culture. So when they travel they want to have whatever they want as they do in their home country, they are used to living in a certain way and expect this to continue.’
The research reveals that billionaires often like their own staff on their private jest to work as cabin attendants, while older Middle Eastern billionaires like to plan the layout if their jets and yachts, often featuring a traditional Arab meeting room or Majilis (an area of special gatherings).

There is a recognition of the importance of things that money cannot buy: moments spent with loved-ones and good health. This is particularly in evidence among Russian and Middle Eastern billionaires. Among Chinese, these elements have always been important and are culturally ingrained.
Billionaires are also focusing more on enjoying their wealth, according to the report, with Russians in particular treasuring moments spent with loved ones and good health – something that has always been important culturally to the Chinese.
