HSM congratulates HSM Senior Counsel, Robin McMillan on his appointment as a judge of the Cayman Islands Grand Court
The HSM Group is pleased to congratulate Robin McMillan, Senior Counsel of HSM Chambers, on his recent appointment as a Judge of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands.
With a career extending over 40 years, Robin has already made substantial contributions to the legal profession in the Cayman Islands and elsewhere. At HSM he had specialised primarily in international commercial litigation, insolvency, trusts, company Law, judicial review and public Law.
Robin has been ranked consistently by PLC Which Lawyer? since 2007 for his work in dispute resolution, restructuring and insolvency. He is admitted to the bars of several jurisdictions: England and Wales, Bermuda, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, California and the Cayman Islands.
His legal career in the Cayman Islands began in 1995 when he became Senior Crown Counsel with the Cayman Islands Government for two years; later joining Hunter & Hunter where he acted on behalf of the Official Liquidators of BCCI (Overseas) in what was the world’s largest banking insolvency. During these years, he conducted the first case from the Cayman Islands to the European Court of Human Rights. He was also a member of the Law Society Sub Committee that considered the introduction of a Commercial Court (now the Financial Services Division) in the Cayman Islands as well as the Law Society Sub Committee that considered the reform of the Freedom of Information Law in the Cayman Islands.
Since his January 2015 appointment as an Acting Judge, Robin has continued fulfilling his regular responsibilities within HSM. He now looks forward to this new chapter, explaining: “It is a great privilege and an honour to serve the public in this manner. I look forward to undertaking my duties in the Grand Court.”
Having acted as a senior government lawyer in Bermuda for over ten years before moving to the Cayman Islands, Robin credits the influence of Mr. Gerald Collett (former Attorney General of Bermuda, and Cayman Islands Chief Justice and Judge of the Court of Appeal) amongst the driving forces which have guided and encouraged him throughout his career. HSM wishes Robin the very best in his new appointment as a Judge.
