Idyllic conditions for Marathon
Getting up early is not my scene and 5am to watch a race let alone take part in one is not on my To Do list.
However, all of you on Grand Cayman, and there were lots, who took part or watched the 2012 Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, had the best conditions the Weather God could conjure up. Temperatures on Sunday morning, December 2nd, were in the 70’s and with a balmy breeze blowing on the most beautiful Caribbean island, why it almost made me think “maybe next year…”
By then I will have come to my senses so nothing to worry about.
There were 122 participants in the Marathon – a record – with 70 men and 43 women. The average time to complete the course was 4:39:28.7 and the winner, Jon Rankin from Costa Mesa, California, USA, completed the course in 2:43:09.5. Don’t you just love this half seconds given at a Marathon!
Steve Speirs, also from the USA, was second at 3:03:38.8 followed by Geoff Riggs from Canada at 3:05:19.4.
The first Cayman runner across the line was fourth placed Beth Florek who was also the first female to cross the line in a time of 3:12:06.6.
However, despite all those females taking part, the first woman crossing the line was Claire Critchley, also from the Cayman Islands, in a time of 1:34:12.6. She was placed overall at 13th.
An interestingly named Thong Distance Runners of mixed gender were placed eighth!
There were just two competitors in Wheelchair Half Marathon and this was a very tightly contested race with Ryan Chalmers just beating Brian Siemann with a time of 0:55:52.0 against 0:55:52.6. Now I know why there was a half second!
Congratulations to everyone who took part and to the organisers. It gets better with each year.
