Message from DG Deputy Governor – Hon Franz Manderson
This challenge is launched in keeping with my goal to have a healthier, more active Civil Service. It has been extremely pleasing to have so many Civil Servants join me on this journey towards health and wellness by participating in the various community fitness initiatives over the past few years, including the InterTrust Marathon and many walks/runs. We, as Civil Servants, now have the opportunity to host our own fitness initiative, in the form of a 5K walk/run. What is more exciting is that this event will also give us the opportunity to support a very worthy cause and give back to our community.
The theme of this year’s DG 5k Challenge is “Running for the New Hospice”. Many of you may be aware of Derek Haines’ (former Civil Servant) campaign to raise $1 million dollars for Hospice Care Cayman, to build a much-needed new facility – he is running six marathons over the course of the year to raise funds and public awareness of the work of this important organisation. To support Derek Haines in his campaign, I will be donating the funds raised from the Deputy Governor’s 5k Challenge to Derek’s campaign to raise funds for the new Hospice Care building.
I am co-sponsoring this event with CINICO, who are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, and DART, who are supporters of Derek Haines’ campaign as well. I want to take this opportunity to thank these two sponsors for their generous support of the event.
