India and the Cayman Islands combine forces to promote medical tourism in the Caribbean
By Josefina Josepha From Caribbean News Now
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao — Dr Chandy Abraham, CEO of Health City Cayman Islands, paid a strategic visit to the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba on Thursday, followed by a visit to Curacao on Friday. Health City Cayman Islands is a tertiary care, specialty medical resource for adult and pediatric cardiology, adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, anesthesiology, orthopedic surgery, pulmonology, pediatric endocrinology, critical care services and diagnostic services.
In 2013, the Cayman Islands had a population of about 58,435 persons living on just over 264 square kilometers and it was ranked ninth in the world with a nominal GDP per capita of $59,448 in 2013 measured by the United Nations Statistics Division.
In an exclusive interview with Caribbean News Now, Abrahams noted that the nature of his visit includes collaboration and cooperation on a number of topics related to health care attention, delivery and services (HCADS).
His visit was timed perfectly, coming on the back of a half-a-billion guilders in debt for the construction of Hospital Nobo Otrobanda (HNO) and the coincidence that the health minister Dr Bernard Whiteman is now Curacao’s fifth prime minister.
Narayana Health is one of the parent companies of Health City Cayman Islands and it seems that well known Indian cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty has a controlling interest in both health facilities.
Health City Cayman Islands employs fewer than 28 percent of its labour force from the Cayman Islands, with the remaining overwhelming majority of Indian origin.
The Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory that lies just south of Cuba, is renowned for its banking and financial services along with its offshore investments. However, it now seems that the Cayman Islands has become deeply involved in medical tourism with the assistance of Narayana Health and Health City.
Health City Cayman Islands, the vision of top heart surgeon and humanitarian Dr Devi Shetty, is supported by two major healthcare organizations, Narayana Health and the US-based Ascension which is one of the nation’s largest faith-based and nonprofit health systems, providing the highest quality care to all with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Health City Cayman Islands provides compassionate, high-quality, affordable healthcare services for all in a world-class, comfortable, patient-centered environment.
