thumb_Bordens PizzaBeloved Family Restaurant Re-Opens: Welcome Back Borden’s Pizza!

Wednesday, June 04, 2014 ……Childhood memories of tasty treats are being shared across social media by excited Grand Cayman residents anticipating the re-opening of a beloved family restaurant. After a hiatus of several years, The Original Borden’s Pizza is re-opening on Saturday, 7 June in its new location at Trafalgar Place, West Bay Road.

A family-owned business originally opened in 1970 by Mrs. June Borden, Borden’s Pizza sold in the mid 1990’s due to the ill health of its founder. The original location was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004; the business is being re-opened by Ms. June’s grandson-in-law Raymond Hydes and grand-daughter Tiffany Hydes.

The couple are busy putting the finishing touches on their new location, and have their menu in place featuring all of Borden’s Pizza’s original family recipes. Enthusiastic former patrons of the original restaurant are already putting items like the Borden’s Special pizza and the Hush Puppies on their social media culinary wish lists.

“Our logo says it all,” Tiffany said. “Our grandmother was the original founder of Borden’s Pizza and we have all of her original recipes to share with all of her loyal customers once again.”

The logo for The Original Borden’s Pizza features the smiling face of Ms. June along with the slogan: “A Caymanian tradition since 1970.”

Ms. June will be on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon at the new location’s opening on Saturday, 7 June at 11am.

The Original Borden’s Pizza will focus initially on carry-out orders and will be open from 11am to 11pm from Monday through Thursday and on Saturday and Sunday. On Fridays, the restaurant will be open later – from 11am to 1am.

“There is counter seating at our new location, as well as outdoor café seating and we’ll also be offering carry-out service. We’ll be looking at offering delivery service in the future as we grow,” Raymond said.

For more information and to place your take-out orders, call The Original Borden’s Pizza at 949-3462. Or find them at Facebook.com/BordensPizza.

Google is building 180 satellites to spread internet access worldwide

By Jon Fingas From Engadget

Google’s plans for satellite-based internet access just got a little more concrete. The Wall Street Journal hears that the search firm is preparing to build 180 “small, high capacity” satellites (not pictured here) that will go into low orbit and provide internet connections to underserved areas. While details aren’t forthcoming about the machines, there may be more on the way; reportedly, the company could “double” its vehicle count if all goes well. A spokeswoman didn’t confirm or deny the efforts, but did note that having an internet link “significantly improves people’s lives.”

The initiative might be very expensive, with tipsters estimating a cost between $1 billion to $3 billion. However, the satellites could eventually pay for themselves. They would really be an extension of the thinking behind the balloons from Project Loon — getting more people online increases the number of people who can see ads, improving Google’s bottom line. Any orbital internet service would most likely serve as a complement to Project Loon, providing data in far-flung, sparsely populated regions while the balloons handle places with greater demand.

Will stinging nettles really sting you?

From The Kitchn

I was wary of stinging nettles for quite a while. Until just the other week, in fact. There was always something about the sign marked ‘DANGER’, perched in front of the bin of nettles at the farmers market, that kept me away. Not to mention their painful-sounding name. I mean, stinging nettles…not exactly the most friendly-sounding name.

So, will stinging nettles really sting you?

Yes, and no.

As the name implies, stinging nettles have tiny hairs on the stems and underside of the leaves, containing a mixture of chemicals that cause a rather unpleasant stinging and burning sensation when touched. Never use your bare hands when handling or preparing nettles, instead wear gloves or use tongs when gathering them at the market.

So, can you actually eat stinging nettles?

Yes, you can! Cooking nettles, neutralizes the stinging properties. Not only are they safe to eat but they’re also delicious, and packed with nutrients! Nettles have a distinctive woodsy, herbaceous taste and make a nice substitute for spinach.

While many suggest blanching nettle leaves, you can also steam, sauté or add them to a soup as you would any other leafy greens.

Use the leaves on the upper part of the plant, and select nettles that have not yet flowered.

Philadelphia Inquirer co-owner among 7 dead in Massachusetts plane crash

By Anita Li From Mashable

Lewis Katz, co-owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer, was among seven people who died in a plane crash in Massachusetts, the newspaper’s editor confirmed.

Bill Marimow told news website Philly.com that he learned about Katz’s death Sunday morning from close associates. Katz was 72.

“He loved his family and his friends and they loved him back in return. We’ve lost a great friend,” Marimow said.

All seven people aboard the private plane died in the crash, according to multiple reports. The Gulfstream IV, which was departing Bedford-based airport Hanscom Field, crashed and caught on fire around 9:40 p.m. ET Saturday as it was leaving for Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey, according to Philly.com. The Massachusetts Port Authority did not immediately respond to Mashable’s request for comment.

Emergency personnel are at the scene of the accident, and Hanscom is currently closed for operations, according to a Port Authority release.

Jeff Patterson, who lives beside the airport’s runway, told The Boston Globe that the plane exploded in a blast, which caused black smoke and flames to rise 60 feet in the air.

Katz and co-owner H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest bought out their partners for $88 million Tuesday, gaining control of the media company, which owns the Inquirer, Philly.com and the Philadelphia Daily News.

“We all deeply mourn the loss of my true friend and fellow investor in ownership of The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Daily News and Philly.com,” Lenfest said, according to Philly.com. “It is a severe loss, but I am pleased to announce that Drew Katz, Lewis’ son, will replace his father on the board of our new company.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the cause of the crash, according to multiple reports.

10 countries with the highest proportion of women in parliament

By Matt Petronzio From Mashable

2013 was a record year for women in parliament around the world. The global average of participating women is now at 21.8%, up from 20.3% in 2012. The average was at 15% a decade ago.

According to a recent report from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Rwanda’s parliament has the highest proportion of women in the world at 63.8%. This is partly due to the country’s new constitution, enacted in 2003, which mandates that at least 30% of all legislative seats be reserved for women.

The second spot on the list goes to Andorra, with 50% of parliament seats occupied by women, followed by Cuba, Sweden and Seychelles. At 0%, Micronesia, Palau, Qatar and Vanuatu have the lowest proportion of female participation in parliament — although it’s worth noting that smaller nations have smaller parliaments.

While these numbers show progress, women remain largely underrepresented in government, even in Rwanda, where participation is lower in higher levels of government. However, the IPU believes that gender parity in parliament is possible within 20 years.

Attached chart, created by statistics portal Statista, shows the 10 countries with the most female participation in parliament.

Cayman women won’t give up on WB Road closure fight

Although the four Cayman women, Alice Mae Coe, Annie Multon, Ezmie Smith and Betty Ebanks, lost their lawsuit that challenged the transfer of several parcels of Crown land, including 4,290 feet of West Bay Road along the Public Beach by the Cayman government to  Dart Realty Cayman Ltd., they have not given up their fight.

It has been confirmed that a Notice of Appeal has been filed against the decision by Grand Court Justice Alexander Henderson who said none of the women were said to have an interest in land adjacent to West Bay Road or even land anywhere near it and “most importantly” they “missed the deadline to file their lawsuit”.

No date has been given when the Court of Appeal will hear the case that was filed on the women’s behalf by Cayman attorney Anthony Akiwumi.

Marbel’s electric skateboard doesn’t look like an electric skateboard

iNews briefs marbelBy Sean Buckley From engadget

Big wheels, heavy motors and enormous batteries: electric skateboards certainly have a type. It doesn’t have to be that way — the latest motorized deck to hit Kickstarter almost looks like a normal longboard. The Marbel Board claims to be the world’s lightest electric skateboard, weighing in at 9.9 pounds. That’s lighter than the Boosted Board or ZBoard for sure, but its weight loss cuts into the vehicle’s battery life: Marbel slows down after 10 miles of city travel, about half the range of its nearest competitors.

It may not take you as far on a charge, but the board promises to shine in other ways: it’s capable of exceeding 20 mph, and its top speed can be customized (via a companion app) to a level the rider is comfortable with. It’s made of strong stuff, too — the deck is a unibody construction built from carbon fiber and Kevlar layers; it’s waterproof. A new ride will set you back $1,199, unless you score an early bird model. Check out the board’s Kickstarter page for more details at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1664522105/marbel-the-lightest-electric-skateboard-in-the-wor

Cayman premier says he will be implementing an incentive approach to employers to engage Caymanians

Cayman Islands Premier, Alden McLaughlin, said in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (4) that forcing employers to engage Caymanians has not worked for decades and a new approach is needed.

He said a huge amount of resources is required to enforce a restrictive regime and successive governments have tried it and he has concluded it is impossible to make it work. Therefore, he said, “government needs to incentivize bosses to train and hire”.

He said he wanted to breathe new life into an accreditation scheme the 2005-2009 PPM administration had worked on where employers would be rewarded who have high levels of local employees.

Incentive rather than compulsion would be tried.

He also said he was giving consideration to finger-printing as an extra aide to border security and creating a data base commencing with permit holders.
