Because of the shrinking budget and the increasing need for the bins the DEH launched an in depth study on the state of the garbage receptacles to determine what was needed. They compared the cost of purchasing new bins and repairing the existing ones. They found they were able to save up to 500 dollars for every container that was repaired.
The DEH estimates that the entire project could save between $90,000 and $150,000.
It’s not too early to book early for the marathon
The 2014 Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon is scheduled for Sunday Dec. 7 and organizers are reminding everyone online registration is open and they are encouraging people to make their commitment early and start training toward the big race.
Race director Rhonda Kelly urges people to register early to take advantage of the lowest prices for the year. The new rates are $72 for the full marathon; $48 for the half marathon; and $152 for the relay event compared to last year’s $60, $40 and $128 respectively. This is the first time in nine years the registration fees for the full marathon, half marathon and four-person relay events have increased.
Those runners who have participated in the full or half marathon for three consecutive years or more can still take advantage of the runner loyalty program, which gives them a price of $60 for the full marathon and $40 for the half marathon up until the day before the race, Kelly added. However, they have to register at the Kelly Holding office in order to cash in on this discount. Online registration can be made on www.CaymanIslandsMarathon.com.
Next up is the Boston Marathon in April where organizers, together with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, will promote the race and the Cayman Islands generally.

Caribbean Bottling Hit By Copper Theft
By Tribune Business Editor From tribune 242
Caribbean Bottling Company is among the latest businesses to fall victim to increasing copper theft, its president describing the situation as a “sign of the times”.
Walter Wells confirmed to Tribune Business that the Coca-Cola bottler suffered a loss of “very valuable” copper wire from its former Thompson Boulevard headquarters when thieves hit it on two consecutive weekends.
“There was some copper wire stolen. It was broken into twice,” he said. “They took a bit of it the first weekend, and last weekend [February 1].
“It was just copper wire for our generator on Thompson Boulevard. What they didn’t get the first time, they came back and took.”
Caribbean Bottling Company has since moved its Nassau headquarters to its purpose built plant on Sir Milo Butler Highway, and Mr Wells said the theft would not impact operations as the affected generator was not currently needed.
“We lost a lot of copper wire, which is very valuable,” he told Tribune Business. “It is a loss, but I have not attached a value to it as it is not pressing, since it does not inconvenience operations.
“It’s a sign of the times in which we live.”

The United States: We’re No. 1… in hosting malware
By Jacob Siegal From BGR
Long before we knew the NSA was monitoring our every move, the constant threat of getting a virus was the primary concern for most Internet users. Viruses are still a major problem for many people, and the United States is host to a ridiculous 44% of the malware online today according to Solutionary. In fact, the U.S. hosts five times the amount of malware as the next leading offender, Germany. Cybercriminals are making use of some of the most popular cloud service to proliferate their malware.
“Cloud computing is rapidly becoming cybercriminals’ favorite method of distribution for their malicious endeavors,” writes Solutionary’s Chad Kahl. “It’s a cost-effective way for bad guys to quickly get online and avoid geographic blacklisting. Amazon and GoDaddy are the “go-to” providers with a combined 30 percent share.”
If you think that anti-virus software is the solution, think again. Solutionary also says that despite using over 40 anti-virus engines during its tests, the “vast majority of samples made it past all of the checks.”
