Cayman’s first female Governor to be Cayman’s first female Chief Scout
On Sunday March 2nd at Elmslie Memorial Church, Harbour Drive, George Town, Cayman’s first female Governor, H.E. Helen Kilpatrick, will become Cayman Islands first female Chief Scout.
The special Founders Day service will be the commencement of Scout activities from March 2nd – March 8th with the theme “Equipping our Youths: Preparing for the Future.”
At the service, Mrs. Kilpatrick will first be invested as a member of the scouts’ worldwide movement.
The final item in the week long activities is a campfire celebration at Sav-New playfield on Pedro Castle Road.
The Governor will also serve as president of the local Girl Guides Movement.
Gawker Media dismissed from Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Hateful Eight’ copyright infringement lawsuit

Gawker Media Group, Inc. has reportedly been dismissed from Quentin Tarantino’s Hateful Eight copyright infringement lawsuit.
According to TheWrap, Gawker Media Group argued that U.S. courts have no jurisdiction over them because they’re based in the Cayman Islands. However, the Delaware-based Gawker Media LLC, the New York-based Gawker Entertainment and around ten unknown parties are still marked as defendants. The dismissal is without prejudice, which means that it has no bearing on the merits of Tarantino’s case.
The origins of the lawsuit stem from back in January, when Gawker’s Defamer posted a link to Tarantino’s leaked Hateful Eight script, as TheCelebrityCafe.com reported. Gawker has had a history of clashing with celebrities, having posted a Hulk Hogan sex tape and Lena Dunham’s book proposal.
When Gawker responded to the lawsuit on Jan. 30, Gawker editor John Cook argued that Tarantino made the leak news all on his own.
Gawker Media Group submitted the motion to be dismissed on Wednesday, The Hollywood Reported noted. The company is represented by attorneys from Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz.

Honduras probes scores of peasant deaths in land dispute

Honduran authorities announced Thursday an investigation into the killings of more than 100 peasants in an ongoing conflict over land tenure in the Caribbean coastal region of Bajo Aguan.
“We will resolve the deaths … to be able to determine the real causes and establish who are the responsible parties and achieve their capture,” Attorney General Oscar Chinchilla told a press conference in Tegucigalpa.
The AG’s office and the National Police will create a dedicated unit in the Caribbean city of Tocoa to probe some 147 homicides that occurred between late 2009 and last month, he said.
“We will investigate the hypothesis that it is the landowners who have been connected with the majority of the deaths,” Chinchilla said.
Organizations representing the peasants in Bajo Aguan say the killings are the work of private security guards employed by palm-oil barons and accuse authorities of colluding with the plantation owners.
In 2011, the administration of then-President Porfirio Lobo, the plantation owners and peasant leaders signed an accord calling for more than 4,000 hectares (9,876 acres) of land to be distributed among landless families in Bajo Aguan.
The agreement has yet to be fully implemented.
Lobo later sent army troops to Bajo Aguan to tamp down the violence, but to little effect. EFE
Cuba investment alarms Caribbean islands

Development of new Cuban port aims to attract international investment to the disadvantage of its neighbours.
At a cost of almost a billion dollars, Cuba’s newest port is being hailed as a sign of its growing economic strength.
The facility built, with Brazil’s help, is set to provide a much-needed commercial link to the rest of the world.
But with so much investment going to Cuba, other nations in the Caribbean are worried about the potential impact on their economies.

Cubans residents in Guatemala against US blockade to Cuba
Guatemala, Mar. 1.- The Association of Cubans Residents in Guatemala Jose Marti, condemned the commercial blockade imposed by US to Cuba by denouncing that the US Pricesmart network banned the workers of the Caribbean Island from buying in this Central American country.
This action is aimed at isolating the Cuban people that for more than 50 years has suffered a cruel and inhuman blockade, which has not been successful at all, on the contrary is condemned every year at the UN General Assembly, denounced a note signed by the Direction Board of that Group.
Last week the Cuban diplomatic mission in this nation denounced the extraterritorial policy of the US blockade by saying that the Pricesmart leading board in Guatemala announced that they suspended membership of Cubans non-resident in Guatemala.
The subsidiary in Guatemala of Pricesmart notified the Cuban embassy here that the measure was adopted in compliance with the US laws, noted the release spread by the quoted diplomatic headquarters.
In its last vote of October, 2013, added the communication, 188 of the 193 countries member of the UN voted against the economic, commercial and financial blockade and only two expressed themselves in favor: United States and Israel.(Prensa Latina)
Tanzania cricketers to play warm up game against Cayman

The national cricket team is scheduled to play two build-up matches in Malaysia before the start of the International Cricket Council ( CC) World Cricket League Division 5 slated for March 6-13 March, this year.
Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) official Kazim Nasser told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ on Frthat the team left Dares Salaam on Thursday (27) and was expected to arrive in Malaysia on Friday.
“Before the main tournament they will play two friendly games against one of their opponents, Cayman Islands, and a local club,” he said.
Nasser added that the team is in good health and looking forward to faring well in Malaysia.
Players in Malaysia are captain Hamis Abdallah, Seif Abdul, Rashid Amir, Arshan Jassani, Saturn Jumbe, Kishen Kamania, Ally Kimote, Enjo Kiongozi, Riziki Kiseto, Nasibu Mapunda, Kassim Nassoro, Benson Nyakini, Abhik Patwa and KhalilRehemtulla.
They are led by coach Zully Rehemtullah and team manager Taherali Hassanali. Six teams that will be part to the tournament are hosts Malaysia, Tanzania, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Jersey Islands and Nigeria.
Tanzania will open their campaign against the hosts on the opening day before they face Jersey a day later and two days later they will battle it out against Guernsey.
“Our boys will test their skills against Nigeria on March 10 before they take on Cayman Islands on March12th,” Nasser said.
“They are in good shape, high spirit and ready for the showdown after more than a month of extensive training at the Muhimbili Cricket Academy in Dares Salaam.”

Announcement of Ironwood deal with government postponed but East West Arterial signed
The announcement of a deal between government and the developers of the proposed $360M Ironwood development and golf course was cancelled at the last minute on Thursday (27).
Golf legend Arnold Palmer, who is backing the development, arrived to presumably take part in the ground breaking that was supposed to have taken place this week.
Although the developers have been very upbeat about the project no details have been presented by government and the two MLA’s East End’s Arden McLean, and North Side’s Ezzard Miller have complained they have been provided with no details of the development.
There are problems and question marks with what is being planned as the development crosses the Mastic Reserve and trail and the National Trust and the Department of Environment have some concerns.
However, Premier Alden McLaughlin has signed a non-binding agreement to extend the East West Arterial 10 miles to Frank Sound Road with the developers that is the first step to complete the deal.
St Vincent police have no motives for second person in 10 days shot in their sleep

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Wednesday February 26, 2014, CMC – Police were searching for the gunman who shot and killed a 49-year-old man as he slept at his home on Wednesday morning, the second such killing in 10 days.
Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, Assistant Superintendent of Police Syndney James, said the authorities have no motives for the murder of Phillip “Super Cat” Qusahie.
Earlier this month, Earl Jack, 26, died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital after an assailant opened his bedroom window and shot him in the head while he slept at his home in Great House, Lowmans Hill.
Last September, Police Sergeant Jimmy Jack, was shot and wounded after an unknown assailant shot him while he slept at a police facility in Calliaqua.
So far this year, five people have been murdered here
Cayman’s Yellow Pages and Google join hands
The Cayman Islands Yellow Pages have announced they have become an authorised Google Adwords Partner. This will help small businesses in Cayman get their message across to consumers Mark Macfee, the Executive Director of yellow Pages said.
In order to achieve this they have developed an app that because it has been geo-coded will help residents find more relevant products and services in their location.
Early/Act Club to be launched by Rotary
The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Central has announced a new service programme called EarlyAct Club. The pilot programme will first be launched at Sir John A. Cumber Primary School.
The EarlyAct Club will target young students and provide them with an opportunity to gain an awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. It will engage them in character building activities preparing them for leadership roles.
Bids sought for new detention centre for Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands government is seeking bids for a company to build a 24-bed modular unit detention centre at Fairbanks, next door to the women’s prison.
The building contractors must submit their bids by March 14th. The estimated cost of the facility is estimated at $2M.
Ground was broken on the detention centre in September 2013.
There is an urgent need for the police holding cells as the current ones at George Town Police Station are outdated. Their appalling conditions have been highlighted not only by Cayman’s Police Commissioner, but also by outside inspectors, and leaves the government open to legal claims because the cells are a breach of human rights.
Milli Vanilli producer sells Miami Beach land

A company controlled by German record producer Frank Farian, the man behind the infamous Milli Vanilli duo, sold a waterfront site in Miami Beach for $3.9 million.
Far Corp., a Cayman Islands corporation controlled by Farian, also known as Franz Reuther, sold the vacant, 20,500-square-foot site at 3080 N. Bay Road to Coral Gables-based SEB 3080 LLC, which is managed by David Burstyn. The sale resolved a foreclosure lawsuit from Citimortgage that was filed in June 2013
Farian’s Far Corp. still owns the neighboring lot at 3100 N. Bay Road.
Farian got his big break in the 1970s with the group Boney M., but he remained behind the scenes. He wrote the music and recorded his own vocals but had Bobby Farrell play the front man for live performances.
In 1990, when it was revealed that the duo in Milli Vanilli didn’t sing on their record, Farian admitted to ghostwriting their music and hiring dancers Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus to pose as the performers. The group had earned a Grammy Award for Best New Artist that year, which was withdrawn.
Farian also produced records for Meat Loaf and No Mercy.

Early morning earthquake shakes some Trinidad residents awake

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday February 28, 2014, CMC – An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 rattled west Trinidad on Friday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The Seismic Unit of the University of the West Indies (UWI) said that the quake, which was felt at 5.09 am (local time) occurred in the Gulf of Paria and was located at 10.44 degrees North, and 62.55 degrees West.
It had a depth 83km and the Unit said that it was felt in Westmoorings, west of the capital.
