Caribbean Airlines places ban on use of Galaxy Note 7 in flight

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, September 11, 2016 – Following a directive issued by the T&T Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA), Caribbean Airlines yesterday placed a ban on the in-flight use and battery charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on all its flights.
The Caribbean Airliones action comes one day after some of the biggest airlines around the world imposed similar bans.
In a brief media advisory, the state-owned airline said the devices are not to be stored in checked luggage and while they can be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage or on their person, are not to be used or charged on-board the aircraft.
“Caribbean Airlines’ number one priority is the safety of our customers and crews, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the airline said
The Galaxy Note 7, the latest in Samsung’s range of smartphones was due to be launched in the T&T market in October. There is no word yet on whether those plans have been put on hold following last week’s global recall.
Samsung Electronics took action after dozens of users reported that the devices exploded or caught fire. The company traced the problem to a flaw in the phone’s lithium battery, and issued a voluntary global recall.
Second case of dengue fever found in Palm Beach County

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. —
Health officials confirm a second case of dengue fever in Palm Beach County.
In 2016, there have been two travel-related cases of the mosquito-borne illness.
“They’ve all been imported from overseas” mosquito specialist Chris Reisinger says.
Health department workers believe this is an isolated case, but will not say where exactly in the county the infected person lives. The same mosquito, the Aedes aegypti, carries dengue, Zika and several other illnesses.
Dr. David Dodson is an infectious-disease specialist. “Dengue can actually be a more serious disease,” Dodson explains, “and it is more common.” Dodson says in the roughly 40 cases of dengue in Florida, none; has been locally acquired.
Those infected pick up the fever in areas like the Caribbean and South America.
“In Florida we see cases usually from the Caribbean,” Dodson says. “The traveler comes back with fever, rash and muscle aches.”
Whether it’s Zika or sengue, Dodson says there’s one thing you can do to protect yourself.
“Mosquito bite prevention — that’s what everybody needs to focus on.”

Fifth suspect charged in murder of Jamaican-born legal aide to NY Governor

NEW YORK, United States (CMC) – A New York grand jury has indicted a fifth person in connection with last year’s murder of Carey Gabay, the Jamaican-born legal aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Gaby was shot by a stray bullet during the Caribbean J’ouvert celebrations here.
The authorities said that Kenny Bazillewas was arrested last week in California and extradited to New York on Saturday to face charges for the September 7, 2015 shooting death of Gaba.
Gabay was with his brother on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, enjoying the pre-dawn festivities when he was caught in a gang shootout and shot in the head.
Bazille, 31, along with rival gang members, Micah Alleyne, 24, Tyshawn Crawford, 21 and Keith Luncheon, 24, each faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of the second-degree murder charges.
Gabay, a Harvard-educated attorney, who became First Deputy Counsel to Cuomo’s Empire State Development Corporation, died several days after the shooting.
Bazille’s case is expected to get consolidated with other co-defendants including Stanley Elianor, 25, who was indicted on weapons charges.
On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ruled out cancelling J’Ouvert activities in the Caribbean community in Brooklyn because of shootings, saying that it is an event that’s “important to the community.”
Police said four people were shot, two of them fatally, during this year’s J’ouvert.

Cayman Islands National Heroes Day tourism nominations needed
Leaders from the Ministries of Culture and Tourism officially launched the nomination period for pioneering and long service individuals to be recognise at the National Heroes Day 2017 during a press conference on Wednesday (31 August 2016).
Next year’s annual event, on 23 January 2017, will pay tribute to pioneers in tourism and honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the past and on-going development of tourism in the Cayman Islands.
The nomination period begins 1 September 2016 and will run until the end of the month.
Urging individuals to take advantage of this opportunity, Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Moses Kirkconnell said, “over the next 30 days I strongly encourage everyone to get involved with this process, and fill out a nomination form for someone you think is worthy of this recognition.”
Ministerial Councillor for Culture Roy McTaggart, speaking on behalf of the Premier and Minister for Culture Hon. Alden McLaughlin at the press conference, said: “We are proud to recognise those who have given themselves to make the Cayman Islands a better place, not only for those who call this country home, but for the people who come to enjoy our piece of paradise, and arrive and depart feeling and knowing the true meaning of Caymankind.”
During the press conference Councillor McTaggart also announced new details regarding the nomination categories.
“The recipients of the ‘Emerging Pioneer’ category will now receive a commemorative insignia along with their certificates at the ceremony next January,” he explained. “This is a special memento that has previously only been given to the ‘Early Pioneer’ and ‘Pioneer’ categories.”
Chief Officer for the Ministry of Culture Jennifer Ahearn added that the National Heroes Day Committee has decided to increase the quota for all three “Pioneer” categories to 75 honourees total.
The National Heroes Day Committee will accept nomination forms throughout September, and aims to recognise deserving individuals who have made significant contributions to the tourism sector throughout the Cayman Islands. Nominations can be made in five different categories: Early Pioneer, Pioneer, Emerging Pioneer, Memorial Scroll and Long Service Award.
Nomination forms for the 2017 National Heroes Day awards are available at the reception desk of the Government Administration Building and also online at www.ministryofhealth.gov.ky. Completed nomination forms or inquires can be sent to [email protected].
“I look forward to another successful nomination period as we prepare to honour the achievements, traditions and people of the Cayman Islands,” Councillor McTaggart added. “Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of this historic event. Nominate that person who you believe has truly made a difference, so they can get the credit they so rightfully deserve.”
The committee has chosen to define tourism as:
“Tourism is travel for holiday, leisure and recreation, business, health, education, sports and other purposes. Tourism services and products include the business of attracting, accommodating, transporting, entertaining and operating tours for visitors with the support of allied services. Tourism may be international or domestic.”

His Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley, is usually caught between the two. The British comedy, written by Sir Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, was fist broadcast by BBC Television in the 1980s has now been adapted to the Cayman stage by Chuck and Barrie Quappe. As the Cayman Parliamentary system is based on Whitehall, any of the situations will be undeniably familiar to all that live in Cayman!

The Pirates Week Festival Office is inviting participants for the annual Food Festival to submit their vendor applications for the below dates/times:

All vendors must comply with the rules and regulations set by the Pirates Week Festival Office and must present a valid Food Handling Certificate for all persons handing food by the 31st October.
