Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands issues safety advisory on Galaxy Note 7

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands issued a safety advisory on transporting the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 by aircraft:

The purpose of this safety advisory is to advise air operators, passengers and crew of the risks involved in transporting the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone in checked baggage or inside the cabin of an aircraft. In light of recent incidents and concerns involving the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, exploding or catching fire. For this reason, The Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands (CAACI) strongly advises air operators, passengers and crew of this safety risk and is recommending that Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices not be turned on or charged while on board the aircraft and not to be placed in checked baggage.

This advisory is the result of Samsung’s recent concerns raised about their Galaxy Note 7 device, as well as the subsequent statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA strongly advising passengers against using this device inflight, or checking it in with their baggage.

This safety advisory follows Cayman Airways warning issued last week on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Cayman Airways (CAL) statement said, “Cayman Airways passengers may still carry the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device in their carry-on baggage or on their person, but as of Friday, September 9, 2016, passengers were being advised during the preflight safety announcements that the device must not be switched on or charged on board. Cayman Airways is also advising passengers that this particular device is not to be stored in checked luggage.”

ap7517867572941-940x580-700x432From Caribbean News Service

NASSAU, Bahamas, Sep 19 2016 – The Bahamas Monday said it had detained more than 100 Haitian immigrants who sought illegal entry into the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

Solar cell efficiency doubled

insolight-36-percent-efficient-solar-cell-889x592-820x400From The Carbon Wars

As if to prove the sheer speed at which solar cell technology is evolving, a new startup called Insolight claims to have beaten the efficiency record set just over a week ago by a joint team from MIT and Masdar Institute. The new device was invented by a team while working in the innovation incubator at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), and it reportedly has a solar energy conversion rate of 36.4 percent, one percent more than the Masdar/MIT innovation. That efficiency rating is effectively double what is currently available to residential customers, which is precisely the market EPFL’s new startup is trying to help.

EPFL’s Innovation Park helps technology startups with facilities and funding to help translate big ideas into a big impact on the world. The race to innovate more efficient solar cell technology is a mad dash, and there really is no finish line. With each new development building on the discoveries that came before, each new device holds a ton of promise for its potential effect on end users and, essentially, people’s pocketbooks. Insolight’s new technology is currently being tested in a lab environment, vastly different from practical applications, but the staggering energy conversion rate is a good first step.

Insolight’s invention is already being put through the wringer. A prototype was tested by the Fraunhofer Institute, an independent lab based in Germany, in which the 36.4 percent energy conversion rate was recorded. The device tracks the sun, optimizing its capture of solar energy, and since the team chose to build on existing technology, they were able to keep costs under control. Their aim is to produce a highly efficient, but still affordable option for solar energy, thereby competing with existing residential solar arrays. Insolight’s solar panels were also designed to be easily installed on standard mounting systems, which means homeowners would be able to choose just about any mounting system they desire, as opposed to being forced to buy a manufacturer’s proprietary design.

Dominica PM calls on LIAT to show more compassion to passengers

By Antigua Observer From St Lucia News Online

ANTIGUA OBSERVER – Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is urging the cash-strapped regional airline, LIAT, to improve its services to passengers saying “there must be a greater sense of humanism” in the way the airline conducts its operations.

Skerrit, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio, was commenting on the decision by the St. Vincent and the Grenadines government not to pump additional funds into the airline until it improves its services to the island.

The main shareholder governments of the Antigua-based airline are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Last week, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves held talks with a LIAT management team, headed by the acting Chief Executive Officer, Julie Reifer-Jones, two weeks after his administration wrote the airline demanding talks over what it described as its poor service.

The talks in Kingstown last Wednesday were aimed at resolving “LIAT’s deteriorating service experienced by Vincentians” and in a statement afterwards, Gonsalves highlighted a number of challenges, including the lack of information on delays and cancellation of flights to the travelling public.

Small Nantucket utility going green

lighthouse-940517_1920-820x400From The Carbon Wars

Across the country, a growing number of major corporations, like Google and Amazon, are buying their own renewable energy. They’re not waiting for utilities to make the shift away from fossil fuels. But often times the biggest changes happen at local levels.
In Nantucket, a small utility is also moving in that direction to save money and reduce carbon emissions.

The Narragansett Bay Commission owns and operates the two largest wastewater treatment facilities in the state. Cleaning water is expensive, which is why the wastewater agency is aiming to run on 100 percent renewable energy within two years.

Agency officials are planning to buy or produce more energy than they need to balance fluctuations dictated by weather. If a power system were to go down, then the agency would still get electricity from the regional grid.

The commission has reduced its energy usage by more than 8 percent since 2003 through conserving energy alone. Later this fall, officials will look into buying solar energy.

Changes at the local level, if carried forward by enough utilities, can change the carbon balance of our planet.

2016 is proving to be amazing around the Prospect Playhouse! We have been busy renovating the auditorium this summer and getting ready for a smashing end to 2016!

And Yes! Its election season and what greater way to lighten the mood than coming to see the very funny, Yes Minister!

September 15,16,17,22,23,24,29,30, October 1

Yes Minister is a satirical look at the early career of Jim Hacker MP; a newly appointed cabinet minister in the fictional Department of Administrative Affairs at Whitehall. Hacker goes through various struggles to formulate and enact legislation or effect departmental changes that are continually opposed by the British Civil Service in particular his Permanent Secretary, Sir Humphrey Appleby. His Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley, is usually caught between the two. The British comedy, written by Sir Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, was fist broadcast by BBC Television in the 1980s has now been adapted to the Cayman stage by Chuck and Barrie Quappe. As the Cayman Parliamentary system is based on Whitehall, any of the situations will be undeniably familiar to all that live in Cayman!
