Apple created its most unusual ad campaign for Earth Day
Apple Earth Day
Apple describes how solar panels power its stores and offices, but also help feed yaks. YouTube
Typically Apple campaigns focus on what people can do with the devices the company sells, but for Earth Day on Saturday April 22nd, the Cupertino-based company created a series of animated videos, unlike any other Apple ad created to date.
Apple put its own employees, who talked up the different ecofriendly initiatives the company is running, at the center of the campaign, which has very un-Apple like humor and self-mockery.
One of the spots, titled “Why does Apple make its own sweat?” (watch it in full below), describes how the company decided to start making its own artificial sweat when one of the creators dips a finger in the bottle of artificial sweat to taste it.
The other three videos, released on YouTube, each talk about a different initiative: how Chinese solar farms produce enough electricity for its stores and offices, how nothing from its China assembly lines goes to landfills, and how Apple Park is reducing the company’s cooling load.
The company worked with artist James Blagden to create the animated videos.

New ideas
By Paul McGowan PS Audio
Every new idea has risk. When radical new inventions like the light bulb, car, airplane, or escalators were launched most scoffed at their introduction. Yet, today they are commonplace.
Change is hard for most people, but a small group of us are eager for it. We’re known as early adopters.
The vast majority of people want to wait until all the noisy changes have sorted themselves out and found acceptance. And that makes perfect sense because most change is short lived.
New ideas are what drive innovation. As a manufacturer, it’s our job to keep pushing the envelope and seeing what comes out of the effort.
Not all of us jump at new ideas, but it is those new ideas that eventually become the bread and butter discoveries that make our music better.
Thank goodness for the new.

New Cayman Islands’ DVDL car plates being issued
The DVDL’s initial focus is on replacing the temporary plates with new permanent plates, as well as issuing registration plates to newly-registered vehicles. Owners who were issued temporary plates are reminded that, when collecting the new plates, they must bring in the temporary plates, the windshield coupon (if not expired), as well as their logbook.
About 2,400 temporary plates have been issued in recent times, and all of these should all be replaced during May 2017.
Starting in June, DVDL will begin the process of replacing the registration plates on vehicles which are up for renewal that month. Customers will be issued the same plate number, and there is no cost for the new plates. Drivers are advised to renew their vehicles at the same location, as done previously, as this is where the new registration plate can be collected.
All registration plates are being embossed on-island by DVDL. Both the plates and the windscreen coupons are tamper-proof; they cannot be removed for illegal use on other vehicles.
Owners of vehicles being registered and licensed for the first time will pay the usual $75 fee for a set of plates, as well as the associated fees based on the respective categories of vehicles.
Plates are being issued at the DVDL’s three locations on Grand Cayman: the headquarters at 990 Crewe Road; Unit 9 in Banks Plaza on Reverend Blackman Road, West Bay; and Unit 2035 in the new South Coast Plaza, Breakers.
Customers are reminded that both plates need to be installed on vehicles in the prescribed manner. However, one significant change to the process is that the new coupons are to be installed in the centre of the inside of the windscreen, directly below the rear-view mirror. An instruction pamphlet is provided along with the new registration plates.
“I thank the public for their patience,” said DVDL Director David Dixon. “I also want to recognise my staff, and those from the vendor, Toennjes, for their dedication and long hours during this transition.”
He added that the vendor has been on-Island in recent weeks, managing setup and training of DVDL staff.

The new DVDL plates will be used on all vehicles.

Venezuela represents a trouble spot, though fears of spillovers to neighbors should be tempered, said Robert Rennhack, Deputy Director, Western Hemisphere Department, IMF.

Air conducting
By Paul McGowan PS Audio
I don’t seem to be able to restrain myself with music. My hand just starts waving in the air—like Peter Seller’s character in Dr. Strangelove—though mine’s in the style of a conductor rather than a demagog.
I am always impressed at the power of music to move me. And I am not alone. Cadres of rock concert air guitars conduct dancers unable to sit when the music’s playing.
It’s all I can do to restrain my hand gestures at symphonic concerts or a night at the opera. But even the most cultured music listener cannot fully restrain themselves. I’ve seen heads bob, toes tap, and tears of joy at these events too.
The power of music to move us is in our DNA and cannot be ignored.

About the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands
Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.
NGCI is at the forefront of visual arts education in the Cayman Islands hosting 25+ education and outreach programmes monthly, across all three islands. These programmes aim to capture every age group in our community from the youngest pre-schoolers to senior citizens, in addition to marginalized members of our community. They combine arts education with enriching creative experiences which foster creativity, help build self-esteem, and provide effective and invaluable explorations of culture, cultural heritage, national identity and community values.
NGCI Site & Facility
The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.
As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.
