A Bus route has been added in George Town, leaving the Public library parking area at7:00, stopping at Cayman Compass building and the Airport Fosters.  The bus is marked Bobo $1 Public transport and is blue in colour, there is no charge.

Bus Driver Not Employed with Cayman Islands Lighthouse School

The Ministry of Education seeks to clarify inaccurate reports that have been circulating regarding a “belligerent bus driver”. While the Ministry cannot comment on what Mr. Lockley Morrison is being accused of, it can confirm that he has not been employed at the Lighthouse School since February 2015. Any reports indicating that he is currently employed by the school are inaccurate.

Cayman Islands Customs Confirms E-mail Circulating is False

The Customs Department categorically states that the email message given below which is circulating amongst the Cayman Islands public is false. The department reiterates that the email has not emanated from Customs. The matter, designated as SPAM, has been reported to the relevant authorities.

The false email reads:

“The Cayman Islands Customs Commission Announced Yesterday to Banned some Companies and revoke their license due to the Customs (Prohibited Goods) (Amendment) Order, 2016. (Ex93, S2). We advised all companies to check their company status below;” and this is followed by a “Click to Check Status to Verify” button.

The department urges the public not to click any buttons on this spam message.

Cayman Islands: Man Charged with Assault, 4 October

Just before 2PM, on Sunday 1 October, police responded to the Cayman Islands Hospital after being informed that there was a patient in the A&E who’d been assaulted.

Police discovered that on the day before 30 September the man was stuck in the face by another man, while they were both at a party in West Bay. As a result, the victim received serious injuries to his face. The victim was “air-ambulanced” on Monday, 2 October, to seek further medical attention.

A 28-year-old-man of West bay was arrested on suspicion of assault GBH and is currently in police custody. He has since been charged with Assault Inflicting GBH, Assault Actual Bodily Harm, Possession of Ganja, Possession of Drug Utilities and Failing to Provide a Specimen. The man appeared in court this afternoon and has been granted court bail.

The list of Cayman Islands Public Holidays for 2018 is now officially confirmed and released by the Deputy Governor’s Office.

Royal Caribbean cruise ship receiving multi-million dollar makeover

Royal Caribbean has announced that they will be adding new features to Independence of the Seas that will make the cruise ship even more extraordinary than she already is.

Three months ago, the cruise line announced that Independence of the Seas would be receiving water slides, an escape room, a trampoline zone, and laser tag when the ship goes into dry dock in 2018. Now, Royal Caribbean announced even more features that will be added to the ship as part of a multi-million dollar makeover.

Independence of the Seas will boast lots of new and exciting activities like the interactive aqua park Splashaway Bay, which will be bigger and better than ever before and feature waterslides, water cannons, fountains, pools and the child-favourite drench bucket.

Extending the speciality dining options onboard, Izumi, the exotic Asian-inspired dining experience, will be introduced to Independence of the Seas, giving guests the chance to enjoy fresh sushi and experience skilled hibachi chefs cooking tableside on Teppanyaki grills.

Breathtakingly beautiful new lounges and Panoramic Ocean View staterooms will add an extra bit of extraordinary to Independence of the Seas. With stunning wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling views, guests can soak up the feeling of standing on the bridge of the ship and watching the sunset over the coastline, all from the privacy of their own stateroom.

Sailing from Southampton after her incredible makeover in summer 2018, Independence of the Seas will have an all-improved ice rink, as well as a revamped theatre ready to wow with the much-loved Broadway show, Grease.

CMI Is Now Caribbean Maritime University

On September 28, the Caribbean Maritime Institute hosted its charter day ceremony at the National Arena. The festivities, which took place on World Maritime Day, included the installation of the university’s chancellor, Professor Fritz Pinnock, as well as its president and deputy president. There was also the awarding of two honorary doctoral degrees.

The ceremony was well attended by leaders of civic society, as well as members of the shipping community. Prime Minister Andrew Holness gave the keynote address.

Hurricane Irma Appeal launched by Cayman Islands Red Cross

The Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) is launching its Hurricane Irma appeal in light of the devastation suffered by the Eastern Caribbean islands as the storm continues to wreak havoc throughout the region.

“We really don’t know the extent of the damage as full assessments haven’t been conducted yet, but based on what we have seen and heard Irma has been catastrophic for several nations,” explains CIRC Director Jondo Obi.  “The Anguilla Red Cross has lost its headquarters, and as has now been widely reported the island of Barbuda has basically been declared uninhabitable,” she continues.

“We are still working on establishing contact with our counterparts throughout the region, and those with whom we have reached have stated that they are physically well but emotionally devastated,” adds Mrs. Obi.

The CIRC’s Irma appeal is strictly for monetary donations, and the organisation urges residents *not* to make arrangements to send supplies to the affected areas.

“The arrival of unsolicited donations into a disaster zone is at times referred to as the second disaster,” explains Deputy Director Carolina Ferreira.  “The items that most people would like to donate, like clothing, shoes, household items and toys, are not a priority in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophe, and when they arrive into affected areas they create numerous problems for workers on the ground,”  she explains.

Unsolicited donations are not only difficult and costly to send, but in areas where major ports have been affected and alternative locations are being utilised they become difficult for organisations to access and collect, if they are even made aware of their existence at all.  Furthermore clearing and collecting such goods means diverting personnel and equipment away from more  pressing tasks, like damage assessments.  There is also the issue of sorting and storage, as such widespread devastation means that many buildings have been affected and there is a shortage of space. Lastly, often times the affected population is not in a position to be able to receive these goods at the time when they are sent.

“The Cayman Islands Red Cross is a branch of the British Red Cross, and the funds we collect here go directly to the most affected areas as part of the larger appeal by the British Red Cross and the International Federation,” adds Keith Ford, Disaster Manager for the organisation. “The people of these Eastern Caribbean islands are already going to need a lot of help, but the truth is that Jose is following closely behind a similar path and set to turn into a major hurricane itself. We must help.”

Cayman Islands’ Green Iguana Cull extended

The Department of Environment wishes to announce that this year’s green iguana cull is to be extended until the end of November 2017.

Although contracts to cullers were issued with a provisional end date of 31 August 2017, availability of funds is sufficient to allow current culling contractors to continue until the end of November. Terms of contracts and payment rates will remain unchanged.

Culling contractors and other interested parties are asked to carefully note the following deadlines and arrangements:

1. No new contractors will be signed up after 5 p.m. on 31 August, 2017.

2. The green iguana raffle will close on 31 August 2017. Participants will be invited to attend the closing draw.

3. No contractor reports of culled iguanas will be accepted for payment after 5 p.m. on 30 November, 2017.
