Cayman Islands: Witness Appeal: Fatal Accident in North Side, 29 April

Traffic officers are interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed the fatal traffic collision which occurred in North Side on Sunday, 29 April (see previous release), involving a Honda Fit Aria. Officers are particularly interested in speaking with the occupants of a red vehicle (make and model unknown) that may have been overtaken by the Honda Fit Aria at the time of the collision.
These persons, and any other witnesses to the accident, are being asked to please contact the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit at 649-6254 with any information they may have, or to contact traffic investigator PC Devon O’Connor at Devon.O’[email protected].

I, of course, support unreservedly the Premier’s position.
Over the past three decades in which I have been involved in government, the Cayman Islands has introduced world leading standards of transparency with regard to money laundering and criminal investigation. These exceed standards in effect in the United States and the European Union.
The Cayman Islands has for decades maintained registers of beneficial ownership available to law enforcement and tax authorities, and now has this information available on a central register which is not available to the public. This is entirely consistent with the Cayman Islands Constitution and the Bill of Rights which guarantees every persons private affairs shall be maintained in confidence, save on the enquiry of an agent of the government or a public body established by law.
These new proposals, which I note with astonishment, do not extend to Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, but target, specifically, the legitimate financial services industry of the Cayman Islands. I assume that the members of Parliament in the United Kingdom were not aware that, unlike the United Kingdom, the Cayman Islands has systems already in place which require the maintaining, by corporate and other professional persons, of substantial information on persons who are directors, officers, shareholders and/or controllers of corporate and investment vehicles. This information is available when there is a justifiable need by law enforcement agencies.
In the event that the matter cannot be sorted out through negotiation, the Premier, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, and the Cabinet have my full support to determine the legitimacy of the proposals through the legal system as the same appear to be a clear violation of the Cayman Islands Constitution and an individual’s legitimate right to privacy.
The Cayman Islands government is under an obligation to protect its people and, in the light of this suggested and unwarranted intrusion, to consider all its options, which responses I will fully support and urge all Caymanians to support the Premier.

Cayman Islands Wanted Man, Marlon Crowe, arrested

This morning [Thu] 3 May, RCIPS and Customs officers, in coordination with the Department of Immigration, conducted a joint operation at an address on Frank Sound Road. During the operation, 36-year-old Marlon Crowe, who is wanted on suspicion of entering the country illegally (see below release), was arrested and taken into custody. A second man at the location, age 30 of Bodden Town, was also arrested on suspicion of harbouring a fugitive.
They both remain in custody as investigations continue.

Police are requesting the public’s assistance in their search for a illegal man by the name of Marlon Crowe, age 36, from Jamaica. His picture is attached.
Mr. Crowe was deported from the Cayman Islands in October 2017 and is believed to have returned to the islands illegally. Anyone who sees Mr. Crowe should exercise caution as he could be potentially dangerous. The police should be notified immediately at George Town Police Station at 949-4222.

Despite a speedy recovery, the Caribbean is poised to lose billions of tourism dollars

Many Caribbean beaches, such as this one in Martinique were untouched by hurricanes in 2017. Still, the Caribbean stands to lose $3 billion over the next four years.
The numbers are sobering.
When hurricanes Irma and Maria battered the Caribbean last fall, the region lost nearly 1 million visitors and an estimated $900 million in tourism-related spending. But as bad as those figures appear, the worst is yet to come.
As hotels, restaurants, resorts, and island infrastructures are restored, the Caribbean could see losses totaling more than $3 billion during the next four years until visitor rates climb back to 2016 levels, according to research presented at the World Travel & Tourism Council conference in Buenos Aires. The economic analysis is one of the most complete since the storms devastated many of the islands.

Cayman Islands: PWD & NRA Offices to Close Wednesday 2 May
The Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Roads Authority (NRA) offices will be closed on Wednesday, 2 May.
This closure is in order to facilitate the two Department’s joint hurricane preparedness exercise. During the exercise all government buildings and hurricane shelters will be secured and inspected, simulating what would take place in the event of a real hurricane.
In the event of an emergency the entities can be contacted at 916-6694 (PWD) or 525-1251 (NRA).
Normal business hours will resume on Thursday 3 May.

Cayman Islands Scholarship Deadline is Monday, 30 April 2018
The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the general public that the receipt of applications for local scholarships for the 2018/2019 academic year ends on Monday, 30th April 2018.
All who are planning to apply for a government scholarship for the 2018/2019 academic year are invited to complete the required forms online by visiting www.education.gov.ky/scholarships or using the online application link: https://local-kygov.fluidreview.com/.
Year 11 Clifton Hunter High School, John Gray High School, and Layman Scott High School students wishing to pursue A Level studies beginning in September 2018 must also complete this online application process.
All applications must be submitted online and no late applications will be accepted. Applications should not be delayed because final grades or acceptance letters are not yet available, as they can be uploaded after the deadline.

Cayman Islands: Road Closures for Batabano Events, 30 April – 5 May
The RCIPS is informing the public about the following road closures taking place over the next two weekends in order to facilitate events for Cayman Carnival Batabano.
Carnival Friday Night Fete:
Thursday, 3 May – 8:00PM to 11:00PM
– Harbour Drive will be closed between Warwick Drive and Fort Street to facilitate preparation.
Friday, 4 May – 6:00PM to 3:30AM
– Harbour Drive will be closed between Warwick Drive and Fort Street.
Cayman Carnival Food Festival:
Saturday, 5 May – 7:00AM to 12:00AM
– Cardinal Avenue and Albert Panton Street will be closed.
Adult Batabano Parade:
Saturday, 5 May – 12:00PM to 6:00PM
– The junction of West Bay Road and the Esterly Tibbets Highway, north of Duke’s restaurant, will be closed from 12:00PM
– The parade will proceed south along West Bay Road from 1:00PM and road junctions will be closed as the parade proceeds.
– As the procession passes closed junctions, these will be re-opened to afford motorists the use of the road to the rear of the procession.
– The procession will continue onto North Church Street all the way to Harbour Drive.
– Harbour Drive (between Fort Street and Shedden Road), Fort Street, Edward Street, and Shedden Road (between Harbour Drive and Edward Street) will be closed to facilitate the parade and following events.
Cayman Carnival Street Dance:
Saturday, 5 May – 6:00PM to 12:00AM
– Harbour Drive and South Church Street will be closed between Fort Street and Boilers Road.
Extension for all Cayman Islands contractors to Register
The Builders Board has extended the deadline for all local contractors to register with the board. The contractors’ deadline is now Tuesday 31 July, 2018.
This registration requirement is for general and civil contractors, residential and building contractors as well as trade contractors.

May is Child Month in Cayman Islands
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is celebrating Child Month in May with more than 30 interactive and family friendly events across the Cayman Islands. The month’s motto is Rise Up and A.F.F.I.R.M. (Acknowledge, Friend, Favour, Influence, Respect and Motivate our children).
The observance will officially open with a Child Month church service on Sunday, 29 April 2018. The 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Church of God Chapel, Walkers Road, George Town.
The service will be followed by Celebrity Reading Day, which will take place in all Cayman Brac’s primary schools and day care centres on Tuesday, 1 May, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will involve several well-known local residents visiting classrooms to promote literacy by reading popular children’s books.

Cayman Islands: Diving exercise at the Kittiwake on Monday, 30 April
On Monday, 30 April, the RCIPS will be conducting a dive exercise on the Kittiwake, as part of underwater search and rescue/search and recovery training. Police officers, as well as civilian staff, will be participating in this training, which aims to expand our joint capacities to conduct such water searches and recoveries.

Cayman Islands hurricane shelter volunteers wanted
Caymanians or legal residents interested becoming hurricane shelter volunteers for the 2018 hurricane season should register by emailing [email protected] or calling the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) on 949-0290 by the deadline of Tuesday, 1 May 2018. No experience is required.
Once registered, interested parties must attend both training sessions being held by the Department and the Hazard Management Cayman Islands on Tuesday, 8 and Wednesday, 9 May, John Gray High School canteen/hall, 5.30 p.m. (sign in), sessions 6 p.m. – 8.30 p.m.
Those who are then selected to become shelter managers or district representatives must attend a further training session on Tuesday, 29 May, Government Administration Building, Room 1038, 5.30 p.m. (sign in), session 6 p.m. – 8.30 p.m.

Cayman Islands Special Olympics June 5th-11th

The Special Olympics is coming up, starting this Saturday, June 5th. Dozens are needed at the opening Ceremony (with the ceremony starting at 3pm, volunteers are needed from 11am-5pm), so make an attempt to come out for an hour or two whenever you’re available! There are various events being held next week as well, all of which need volunteers and supporters.
