Four & a half year jail term for Cayman Islands Permanent Residency scammer

Marcia Hamilton was sentenced last Tuesday (26) to 4 1/2 years at HMP Fairbanks by Justice Charles Quin for her part with two other women of obtaining property by deception in an organised scam over the sale of residency rights.

One of the other co-accused, Judith Hamilton, received a lesser sentence of 2 1/2 years because she had pleaded guilty to the crime.

The third woman, Kathleen Davis, who was also allegedly involved fled to Jamaica.

Cayman Islands serial rapist loses life sentence appeal

Jeffrey Barnes, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, after his third rape of a woman plus other convictions for indecent assault, lost his appeal.

Barnes had argued that the life term was “manifestly excessive” but the appeal court disagreed.

Commentary with Winston Barnes: Sons And Mothers

Mother-and-son_parentingFrom South Florida Caribbean News

SOUTH FLORIDA – Over the years I have harped about the relationship or lack thereof, between fathers and their daughters.

Well, thanks to callers to our Open Line program (WAVS 1170 AM) , it is time to examine the Son – Mother relationship.

I submit that we take the cue offered by two of our callers who said, unambiguously that they do not get along with their mothers. Equally clearly they both said they expressed their disagreement and walked away, never disrespecting their mothers.

That is of singular importance because of the dog-eat-dog world we sometimes live in. Yet, probably one of the most significant observations made by one of these male callers is that our parents owe us nothing. I absolutely and wholeheartedly agree.

Mother-and-son_parentingAnd, I am the same person who does not necessarily agree with the practice of kicking one’s child through the door on their eighteenth birthday.

What I support is that young people, yes those in our community especially, rid themselves of this entitlement attitude! It will not serve you in any arena you plan on living.

I make this demand because one of the callers pointed out young men who walked with this “get everything” and “fast” mentality and both are dead.

Listen to the song, “God Bless the Child…Who’s got his own”, is how the line ends.

FBI won’t tell Apple how it got into the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone

BY CHRISTINA WARREN From Mashable

The FBI on Wednesday opted not to share its method for hacking into the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters with Apple.

After a legal battle that dragged on for more than six weeks, the FBI was able to bypass the encryption on the iPhone 5C used by Syed Farook, thanks to a still unnamed outside party.

The question was then: Would the FBI tell Apple how it got into the killer’s phone? When Mashable spoke to legal experts last month, the consensus was that no, the government would not reveal the method it used to access the phone.

But as recently as Tuesday, the FBI was discussing whether it would reveal the method to Apple under what is known as the Vulnerability Equities Process (VEP). The VEP was created in 2014 to basically determine whether law enforcement or government agencies need to turn over software vulnerabilities to manufacturers so that they can patch those holes to protect their customers from hackers.

In a statement, FBI Executive Assistant Director for Science and Technology Amy Hess said that “the FBI assesses that it cannot submit the method to the VEP.”

“The FBI purchased the method from an outside party so that we could unlock the San Bernardino device. We did not, however, purchase the rights to technical details about how the method functions, or the nature and extent of any vulnerability upon which the method may rely in order to operate.”

In past conversations, Apple has expressed confidence that its code review process will help it patch the method used to bypass Farook’s iPhone. Moreover, its broader commitment to pushing software updates to all of its users means that if it is able to patch the vulnerability, there is a good chance users will actually be protected from that method.

Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik carried out a brutal terrorist attack in December at an office holiday party hosted by Farook’s employer. They killed 14 people. Authorities had said unlocking Farook’s work-issued iPhone may reveal unknown details about the attack, but the FBI has not revealed, what, if anything, the hack drummed up.

BofA shareholders approve exec pay

By: Stephen Alpher, SA News Editor

In no surprise, Bank of America (BAC +0.1%) owners elected all 13 directors nominated by the bank, and approved compensation for top management. Also, no surprise, owners rejected a “clawback” proposal in which the bank could have held onto a substantial portion of the pay of executives for at least 10 years.Among the speakers was analyst Mike Mayo, who criticized the board’s independent members for not holding CEO Brian Moynihan and team more accountable for hitting financial targets. He called the compensation proposal “extra pay for management.”Mayo upgraded BofA to Outperform about three months ago, arguing the cheap valuation and strong balance sheet made the stock a buy despite poor corporate governance.

Local marketing company supports coral restoration in the Caribbean

KTi Marketing, an online marketing company based in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic, has revealed that they were the first to support the Fundacion Dominicana de Estudios Marinos (FUNDEMAR), who have launched a crowdfunding campaign to help restore the Caribbean’s coral reef ecosystems. KTi Marketing is well known for their work in assisting local businesses grow their online presence but it also believes in helping to grow the economy of the Dominican Republic, be that through online marketing or through community support.

Kirsten Tilanus, owner and CEO of KTi Marketing, says: “We love our island and we want to do everything we can to make it grow, focusing on building a stable economy, without damaging the beauty of the island itself. We have done significant work with local businesses to get their name out there, but we also want to focus on the delicate ecosystem of the Dominican Republic. Supporting the Fundacion’s very important work is one of the ways in which we aim to achieve that.”

The foundation aims to raise $5,000 to help restore the Caribbean coral reefs. KTi Marketing has made a significant donation towards this, and they encourage others to follow in their footsteps so that the goal can be reached. To help achieve this, they have also shared the crowdfunding page on the KTi Marketing Facebook page, and they encourage everyone to like the page to be kept up to date with further developments.

“Our Facebook page is often our first point of contact,” adds Kirsten Tilanus. “People can find out about what we are doing, and the businesses we are helping to grow, and also about our other supportive actions, like sponsoring the Fundacion. We will regularly update our followers and likers about progress in the crowdfunding campaign, and we encourage everyone to share that information as well.”

On the KTi Marketing YouTube channel, a wealth of information has been released to explain the work that the company actually does. New videos are added regularly, and the company is currently considering doing a feature video on the Fundacion and how they are supporting coral restoration.

Readers can find all the information about the company work on KTi Marketing website: http://www.ktimarketing.com
