Cayman Islands Bodden Town primary students visit Joint Marine Unit last Friday, 28 April

On Friday, 28 April, the RCIPS Joint Marine Unit hosted thirty-two Year 1 students of Bodden Town Primary school during their daylong field trip to various emergency response departments. During their visit Senior Captain PC Hugh Bush and Customs Officer Randolph Jackson presented the duties of the police marine officers, describing a typical day for a police captain or navigator. The children also boarded vessels while marine officers described the controls and functions of the boats.

“If we are looking for future leaders in the police, recruiting starts now in the schools,” says Inspector Leo Anglin, Marine Commander, “and what better way to introduce these children to the possibility of a police career and maybe pique their interest than for them to see for themselves what our daily work looks like?

I think they saw during their visit that our jobs are tough, yes, but rewarding.”

U.S. based Caribbean bank under consideration

By Ken Richards From Winnfm 98.9

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The region’s being urged to look into the feasibility of establishing a Caribbean Bank in the United States to address the loss of Correspondent banking being experienced by banks in the Caribbean.

Deputy Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Trevor Brathwaite says that’s an option that can’t be ignored.

“In London there are a number of banks that are owned by foreign nationals from other countries and so it’s doable. The feasibility study ought to say once you look at the terms of reference for the feasibility study the modality for establishing a Caribbean bank let’s say in New York, it could be an outright purchase or maybe a second tier bank or the establishment of a bank by private interest collectively” Brathwaite said.

ECCB Governor Timothy Antoine says the option is not a far-fetched one.

First US cruise ship in decades arrives in Cuba

By BBC From St Lucia news Online

A US cruise ship has docked in the Cuban capital, Havana, after sailing from Florida – the first such crossing in more than 50 years.

The Adonia sailed from the port of Miami carrying some 700 passengers.

Cuba and the US restored diplomatic relations last year. But several Cold War-era restrictions on travelling and trading are yet to be lifted.

The cruise trip only went ahead after Cuba scrapped a ban on its citizens entering or leaving the island by sea.

Cubans waved as the ship arrived and hundreds of passengers stood at the railings taking pictures.
