It was a beautiful day last Saturday (7) and thousand s of people took to the streets to watch beauty.
And there was much beauty in the costumes and people walking the streets of Grand Cayman to take part in the annual carnival called Batabano.
Batabano was the brain child of ex Cayman resident Dave Martins who left these shores some years ago to return home to his native Barbados.
He left, many legacies behind and one of them is Batabano that seems to get bigger each year.
It was indeed this year.
Cayman Finance appoints new chairman
Cayman Finance, which represents the financial services industry in the Cayman Islands, has appointed a former Cayman Attorney General as its new chairman.

Worker rescued, rushed to hospital after building collapses at Royalton construction site

WESTERN BUREAU:
Fire and emergency medical personnel were called into action this morning to rescue a construction worker who was trapped in a rubble following the collapse of a section of a building at the Royalton hotel construction site in Negril, Hanover.
After about half an hour of feverish attempts by rescuers, the construction worker was eventually freed and rushed to hospital.
It’s reported that about 6 o’clock his morning a section of the hotel’s decking collapsed.
According to watch commander at the Hanover Fire Department, Choy Malcolm, four other persons were taken to the Savanna-la-mar hospital.
Malcolm said emergency personnel from the Negril, Lucea and Savanna-la-mar fire stations and Emergency Medical units rushed to the site.

Cayman Brac: Public Advisory for The Braccanal Parade on Saturday 14th May 2016
The following roads will be closed at 2:30pm to facilitate the procession of the Braccanal Carnival Parade
· Intersection of Gerrard Smith Avenue and Bert Marson Drive to Crawford Drive via Channel Road. (These roads will re-open as soon as the parade passes.)
· South Side West from the Public Beach to Bert Marson Drive and Gerrard Smith Avenue.
· No east bound vehicular traffic from junction of Gerrard Smith Avenue and Bert Marson Drive.
· Motorists east of Public Beach will use Ashton Reid Drive. All drivers between Public Beach and Bert Marson Drive will be required to allow access to the road by the participants.
All road users are urged to exercise caution during the Carnival.
Child Month Games Night
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is inviting families for an evening of board games at the Book Nook in Galleria Plaza, West Bay Road and at the Aston Rutty Civic Centre in Cayman Brac.
The game night is an annual event on the Child Month calendar and will be held at both locations on Thursday 12 May, 2016 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
The Book Nook offers discount coupons as winning prizes. Dinner is provided by Papa John’s Pizza.

DCI to Close Early on Wednesday and Thursday
The Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI), including its Business Licensing Counter on the first floor of the Government Administration Building, will close from 1:30pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 11-12 May, for a staff training event.
On both days, the DCI office will open from 8:30am to 1:30pm and the licensing counter will open from 9:00am to 1:30pm before closing.
DCI will have normal working hours on Friday, 13 May. The main office will operate from 8:30am to 5pm, and the licensing counter will open from 9:00am to 4pm.

End of May Deadline for Seafarers’/Veterans’ Updates
Seafarers, Veterans and their spouses have until 31 May 2016 to provide their current information to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
The Ministry is in the process of updating its health insurance database and has already distributed the relevant forms.
Any seafarer, veteran or spouse who has yet to receive such a document may provide a postal address to the Ministry so that the form can be mailed to them. Once completed, forms may be dropped off or mailed to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, 3rd Floor Government Administration Building, Elgin Avenue, Grand Cayman, PO Box 131, KY1-9000.
This request was initially made in July 2015 and those Seafarers, Veterans and their spouse who have responded to the initial request need not do so again.

Failure to respond may result in the discontinuation of health insurance benefits.

The Shelter Operations 2016 Hurricane Training for Shelter Managers & District Representatives Volunteers for this year’s Hurricane Season will be held over two days on Wednesday 25 May and Thursday 26 May at the Prospect Primary School Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Registration begins promptly at 5:30 p.m.
All volunteers MUST complete both days of training.
