Rugby: Bahamas falls to Cayman Islands 20-8
By RENALDO DORSETT From Tribune 242
National Rugby Team Falls To Cayman 20-8
THE Bahamas Rugby Football Union’s national team suffered yet another loss in the Americas North zone of the Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification process.
Following a 39-3 loss to Mexico earlier this month, the scoring woes continued Saturday as the Bahamas managed a single try in a 20-8 loss to the Cayman Islands in George Town, Cayman.
Despite the final score, it was a fairly competitive and penalty-filled match that saw the Bahamas unable to recover from an early deficit.
As they did against Mexico, the Bahamas missed an opportunity to score first when Brian Baker missed a conversion and Cayman seized momentum when Venasio Tokatokavanua scored the opening try less than two minutes later. Hanson Shaw converted the extra point to give Cayman a 7-0 lead.
A play that seemed to give the Bahamas new life wound up costing them the services of a key player as Connor Albury suffered a broken leg just short of the try line.
Albury took an opening on the sideline and extended the ball for what looked to be a sure try only to have it knocked out of bounds at the last minute by a Cayman defender.
The momentum shifted back to Cayman as they dominated the remainder of the half. Shaw converted a kick and Andre Ormond increased the home team’s lead with a late half try to give Cayman the 15-0 advantage headed into the half.
The trend continued in the second half as it took just three minutes for Cayman’s Justin White to post another try on the scoreboard for his side. After a failed conversion they held a 20-0 lead.
The Bahamas fought tough for the remainder of the second half, but at a crucial point of the match they were unable to score with the ball inside the five metre line. The drive ended with a knockon giving the ball back to the Cayman Islands.
Ten minutes after their failed attempt, the Bahamas was able to get on the scoreboard for the first time when Mark Hammertoe took advantage of an unorganised Cayman defence to trim the deficit 20-5.
Baker made a 35-yard field goal for the game’s final mark.
In other Rugby Americas North scores on the afternoon, Mexico topped Bermuda 75-10, Guyana defeated Jamaica 23-5 and Trinidad and Tobago dominated Barbados 39-5.
The Bahamas has lost both group matches so far and have mathematically been eliminated from advancing to the second stage of the tournament.
In their final match of the RAN zone championship, the Bahamas will travel to face Bermuda on June 4.

President Maduro in Jamaica; protest planned as he heads to Trinidad
By CARIBBEAN360 From St Lucia News Online
Amid the food, electricity and economic crisis in his country, Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro arrived in Jamaica last night for what the government says is a one-day “working visit”, ahead of his trip to another Caribbean country where a demonstration is being planned.
A Jamaica government statement said Maduro, who was met on his arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, and other dignitaries, is meeting with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and members of Cabinet today.
Senator Johnson Smith said the visit is an important one, and she is expecting the bilateral meeting between the two leaders to be fruitful.
President Maduro last visited Jamaica in September last year, for the Summit to Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the PetroCaribe Agreement, the 200th Anniversary of the Jamaica Letter, written by the Great Liberator Simon Bolivar in Kingston on 6th September 1815, and for the inauguration of the Simon Bolivar Cultural Centre in downtown Kingston.
He leaves the island this afternoon and will head to Trinidad and Tobago
14 medals for Saint Lucia at Caribbean Under-16 Track and Field Championships
IMAGE: Team Saint Lucia
Team Saint Lucia enjoyed a strong performance at the inaugural Caribbean Under-16 Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Fort de France, Martinique.
The meet did not quite live up to the name, with athletes from just six territories competing – Martinique, Saint Lucia, Dominica, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Haiti. But the outing provided a useful measuring stick for the young Saint Lucians, who will have their eyes on further representation at various levels in years to come.
Well over 100 athletes contended not only with each other, but with the elements, an atmospheric trough forcing a number of events to take place despite heavy rains. With a team of 14, Team Saint Lucia captured 14 medals, including five gold, with five athletes taking at least two medals.
Most of the youngsters turned in career-best performances, in spite of the weather, with several of the track events reduced to A and B finals, as opposed to having the athletes run rounds beneath the downpour.
Sanjay Jean was a double gold medallist, winning the boys 200m and 400m. In the half-lap, Sanjay ran 23.84 seconds, into a light wind of -0.9 metres per second. He was followed home by fellow countryman, Jlan Dantes, in 24.07 seconds, and Jean-Christophe Duranty of Martinique in 24.10. In the 400m, Sanjay stopped the clock at 51.76 seconds, ahead of Samuel Nadeau (55.84) of Martinique, and Dachelor Miracle (56.47) of Haiti. Jlan and Sanjay also won silver in the boys 4x100m.
Anfrea Gittens ran 3:13.17 to win the 1000m girls. Thomyka Valcent was just fifth in that race, but ran 59.56 to win the 400m, in which race Nysa Pierre was second. Garvin Inglis won the 1000m in 2:48.29, with teammate Jayeed Norbal taking bronze in 2:49.73.
Zoe Dorville was a double silver medallist. She ran 12.59 into a -1.2 m/s headwind for second place in the 100m, with teammate Deray Desir claiming bronze in 12.71. Zoe was also just two hundredths of a second behind the gold medallist in the 200m, coming in at 25.68 seconds.
There was silver as well for Tyler Toussaint in the boys 100m (11.47 seconds) and Antonio Maynard in the boys Long Jump (6.06m). Tyler and Antonio were on the silver medal boys 4x100m team as well. But for a disqualification in the girls 4x100m, where Team Saint Lucia crossed the line in third, every one of the 14 athletes would have had at least one medal.
Among those looking on at the Games were National Record holders and Olympic hopefuls Sandisha Antoine (women’s Triple Jump) and Albert Reynolds (men’s Javelin Throw). The team was also visited at their hotel by Olympian and multiple National Record holder, Zepherinus Joseph (men’s Marathon).
At least three of these teenagers will be available to selectors for the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games, which will be hosted by the British Virgin Islands in July.

You can now check in to this Caribbean airport with your phone
One of the Caribbean’s leading airports has introduced another customer-friendly feature.
Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport has announced the launch of a new Electronic Boarding Pass system.
That means that the 3.2 million passengers traveling through the Bahamas’ major gateway can now check in using their mobile phones.
Everything needed for check-in, security and US Customs and Border Protection clearance can now make it to your phone.
“We are very pleased to have this new system in our terminals to aid in expediting travellers through LPIA.,” said Vernice Walkine, President and CEO of Nassau Airport Development Company. “We do believe that this system along with our BorderXpress Automated Passport Control kiosks, previously installed in USCBP, will further decrease passenger processing time.”
The system means you can choose not to have a printed boarding pass, and if you don’t have baggage to check, you can skip the check-in line and go right to airport security.
“U.S. Customs and Border Protection is proud to work with the stakeholder community at the Lynden Pindling International Airport to implement the Electronic Boarding Pass program,” said Nassau Preclearance Port Director, Jeff Mara. “This initiative further supports the use of technology in the Preclearance process.”
