Climate change effects threaten Caribbean population, economy:

MEXICO CITY, May 24 (Xinhua) — The surface of 70 percent of the beaches in the Caribbean reduces every year due to climate change, putting the region’s population and its tourism at risk, warned a United Nations (UN) agency here on Tuesday.

Climate change is a challenge for the Caribbean nations’ sustainable development, said the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in a report published during its 36th session, which was attended by 30 ministers and vice ministers of member countries and will be wrapped up in Friday.

Besides its “serious consequences” for the local population, “climate change has also affected marine and land resources that are fundamental to the pillar of the subregion’s tourism,” said the agency.

The ECLAC said that the subregion is also faced with “high levels” of unemployment, poverty and crime among young people, partly due to a weak growth in recent years.

“The combination of poverty and environmental vulnerability puts in danger a large part of the rural and urban population living in poverty,” it added.

The ECLAC also said another development challenge that afflicts the subregion is the “unsustainable” level of debt accumulated by the regional countries, which have been among the most indebted around the globe.

To achieve growth and development in the subregion, the UN commission proposed to create a resilience fund to guarantee the financing of projects for mitigating climate change and reducing debts.

Two Students Missing In Floods

From Caribbean News Service

KINGSTON, Jamaica, May 25 2016 – Rescue teams were expected to resume their search Wednesday for two students of the Paul Bogle High School in St. Thomas after they were reportedly swept away by flood waters on Tuesday night.

The unidentified students were walking along the Cheswick main road when they were swept away and efforts by residents to rescue them were affected by a power outage in the community.

Residents said that a nearby river had overflowed its banks causing the water to flood the area as a result of the heavy rains on Tuesday.

A team from the National Works Agency (NWA) is expected to assess the impact of flooding in sections of St. Thomas.

On Tuesday, sittings at the Morant Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court were cancelled because the building was flooded. The court is expected to re-open later on Wednesday.

Trump: I’ll Debate Bernie for Charity

GetFileFrom newsmax

Image: Trump: I’ll Debate Bernie for Charity

Chances are likely slim, but what about a Donald Trump-Bernie Sanders debate heading into the crucial June 7 California primary?

That possibility surfaced Wednesday, even if in a jocular tone, in an indirect exchange between the Republican billionaire real estate mogul and the senator who Hillary Clinton hasn’t been able to bump from the Democratic presidential sweepstakes.

On ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Trump said he enjoyed watching Clinton’s increasingly heated sparring with Sanders.

“I had no idea it was going to be so nasty,” said Trump, who said he’d be happy to engage Sanders in a one-on-one debate — as long as significant money goes to charity.
Sanders said on Twitter he’d welcome that. “Game on. I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7 primary.”

Baylor University removes Ken Starr as President

Image: Baylor University Removes Ken Starr as President

Baylor University has removed Kenneth Starr as president and will fire head football coach Art Briles because of concerns of the handling of sexual abuse scandals involving football players, the school announced on Thursday.
In the past several months, Baylor, the world’s largest Baptist college, has been criticized for not thoroughly investigating reports of rapes of female students by its male athletes.

Starr, the former independent counsel charged with investigating Bill Clinton during his presidency, will move to the role of chancellor and remain a professor at Baylor University Law School. Briles is suspended with intent to terminate, the college said in a statement.

In March, a former student at Baylor brought a negligence lawsuit in federal court against the school, accusing it of acting callously and indifferently after she was raped by a Baylor football player.

In a separate scandal, Baylor football player Sam Ukwuachu was sentenced last year by a Texas judge to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a fellow student in 2013.

That incident raised questions about how Baylor investigates sexual assaults. The judge in the trial deemed the school’s investigation so insufficient that he barred defense from citing it.

Briles compiled 65-37 record at Baylor since becoming head coach in 2008.

Cricket: Windies face new danger

By Azad Ali From Caribbean Life

West Indies is in danger of replacing Bangladesh at the bottom of the table in the latest International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Test rankings.

The regional team has slipped 11 points, leading Bangladesh by just eight points, according to the ICC latest ICC Test rankings.

Although the team has retained its eighth position, it has dropped from 79 points to 65.

The gap between the Caribbean side and ninth-ranked Bangladesh has been slashed from 29 points to just eight points.

The ICC said with the annual update the results from 2012-13 are no longer included in the calculations and outcomes from the 2014-15 series are weighted at 50 percent.

Meanwhile, the Australians have opened up a six-point lead over India at the top of the rankings, while India now leads third-placed Pakistan by just one point.
