Cuban Migrants in Disagreement in Cayman Islands
Around 1pm today the Department of Immigration was notified of a disturbance occurring between Cuban migrants housed at the Bodden Town Civic Centre.
It appears that two male migrants had a verbal disagreement over possessions that were alleged to have been stolen by one of the males.
The disagreement escalated when the accused migrant tried to physically assault the other male.
The accused male was warned to desist, after which pepper spray was deployed by RCIPS officers on the scene to respond to the threat posed by the accused male. He was then escorted to seek medical attention and later transported to another location.
Also on scene were local media representatives. Their presence caused uproar amongst the migrant population desirous to voice their views. The representatives were requested to refrain from seeking interviews given the current atmosphere was deemed unsafe and could cause further disturbances. The migrants disbursed and returned inside the facility after the media departed.
Order has been restored.
One hundred and six Cuban migrants remain in Immigration custody on Island and are housed at the Immigration Detention Centre or an approved facility.

Cayman Islands What’s Happening at UCCI?
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister to Discuss International Terrorism and Caribbean Preparedness
Thursday, 16 June | 6:00 pm | UCCI Sir Vassel Johnson Hall
Recent international events have posed considerable questions regarding global insecurity.
The multiple manifestations of this encompass radical and extreme religious world views, environmental degradation, food insecurity and the movement of peoples. Of particular urgency is global terrorism.
While it is clear that the Caribbean is not impervious to the reality of international terrorism, it can be argued that the peoples of the region do not know enough of how prepared their countries are.
In the latest installment of the UCCI Distinguished Lecture Series, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines explains the nature of this reality, the extent to which Caribbean countries are affected, or might be, and their levels of preparedness. As an important player in CARICOM, the Prime Minister will outline regional plans to counter global terrorism.
Large groups are encouraged to reserve seats as soon as possible as space is limited.
