The consequences of climate change are an increasing concern for humans around the world. But it’s not just humans who will be affected by these worldwide shifts — it’s our closest cousins, too: monkeys, apes and lemurs.
A new study published in the International Journal of Primatology shows that the world’s primate populations may be seriously impacted by climate change.
“Our research shows that climate change may be one of the biggest emerging threats to primates, compounding existing pressures from deforestation, hunting and the exotic pet trade,” says Tanya Graham, the article’s lead author and an MSc student in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment.
The researchers found that 419 species of primates: lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, monkeys and apes will experience more warming than the global average.
Primate species will likely experience increases of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius for every degree of global warming.
“This study highlights the vulnerability of individual species, as well as regions in which primates as a whole may be vulnerable to climate change,” says Matthews, who will present the findings of this study during the Joint Meeting of the International Primatological Society and the American Society of Primatologists in Chicago later this month.
“Our findings can be taken as priorities for ongoing conservation efforts, given that any success in decreasing other current human pressures on endangered species may also increase that species’ ability to withstand the growing pressures of climate changes,” says Graham. “Primates are often seen as flagship species for entire ecosystems, so conservation can have important ramifications for many other species too. I hope our study will help direct conservation efforts for individual primate species in particular, but also for vulnerable ecosystems in general throughout the tropical regions inhabited by non-human primates.”

Bermuda: Balance Oof Payments & International Investment

The Bermuda current account recorded a surplus of $121 million in the first quarter of 2016, according to the most recent Balance of Payments and International Investment Position report.
“The current account surplus stood at $121 million for the first quarter of 2016. This represented a $99 million decrease from the $220 million surplus in the first quarter of 2015,” the report said.

“The decrease in the current account surplus reflected mostly a fall in the primary income surplus due to a deficit on the investment income account. In addition, increased payments and lower receipts relating to business services contributed to the fall in the current account surplus.
“Year-over-year, the value of imported goods rose 2.8 per cent to $223 million. This increase was due mostly to a $12 million increase in imported goods from Bermuda’s largest trading partner the United States. In contrast, imports from Canada fell by $6 million while imports of goods from the Caribbean region fell by $3 million.

“Among the commodity groups, the increase was reflected primarily in the imports of basic materials, and food, beverages and tobacco, which rose $5 million and $4 million, respectively. In contrast, imports of finished equipment contracted by $5 million during the period. Revenue earned from the exports of goods fell by $2 million during the quarter.
“Receipts from services transactions stood at $277 million during the quarter. Among the services categories, receipts from business services decreased by $10 million, mostly related to a decline of $5 million for financial services.
“In addition, receipts from travel services and the provision of government services both declined by $2 million during the period.”

Another pool emergency reported on Royal Caribbean Cruise ship where boy drowned

The Anthem of the Seas has sailed into a hurricane-force storm and had an 8-year-old passenger drown in an onboard pool.
BAYONNE, NJ — The Royal Caribbean cruise ship Anthem of the Seas – which made recent headlines when it sailed into a hurricane-force storm and when an eight-year-old passenger drowned in an onboard pool – navigated through another emergency situation last week when a 72-year-old woman suffered a medical-related incident while swimming, reports say.
The luxury cruise ship returned to its Bayonne port about four hours ahead of schedule on Thursday after a reported “medical emergency” took place onboard, a Port Authority of NY/NJ spokesman said.
A Royal Caribbean spokesman told NJ.com that guests on the ship witnessed a female passenger “having difficulty swimming in one of the ship’s pools” and eventually being “helped out of the pool.”
Cruise medical personnel initially treated the woman, but when she required additional medical attention the ship increased its speed to arrive at Cape Liberty in Bayonne for further evaluation, the company stated.
The Anthem of the Seas is a luxury cruise liner operated by Royal Caribbean that travels between New Jersey and the Caribbean. It made headlines this winter after it sailed into a winter storm with 30-foot waves and cut its passengers’ vacations short.
In July, a Maryland boy died from “accidental drowning” two days after falling into a pool aboard the Anthem of the Seas. The cause of death was “drowning, with contributing condition of seizure disorder,” a spokesperson from the medical examiner’s office stated, adding that the manner of death was an “accident.”
In February, the ship returned to port ahead of schedule due to a storm forecast. During the trip home, several passengers reported suffering norovirus symptoms.
Lawmakers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have passed a bill allowing defamation on the internet to be punished by prison sentences of up to two years.

The Caribbean nation already has similar laws that apply to print and broadcast media, although they are rarely enforced. The new bill extends such penalties to online information and expression.
Local rights organisations and international press groups have expressed concern that the provisions will be used to stifle free speech and online journalism. They have called for the government to revise the law and decriminalize defamation.
Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves has rejected such criticism and says the legislation has been years in the making.
Parliament approved the law yesterday with a 12-9 vote.

Could Earth be facing a cooling trend?

Recent research by a team of scientists from Northumbria University has suggested there could be a period of low solar activity leading to cooler global temperatures, hopefully negating some of Earth’s unatural heating caused by our man made carbon warming blanket.
The sun is already known to have 11-year cycles of sunspots coming and going on the surface. But models that rely on looking at external features of the stars have only had mixed success in predicting the solar cycles.
New research based on long term solar observations found that we may be entering a period of reduced solar activity, meaning that a period of lower global temperatures could be on the way. These conditions could be similar to those seen during the “Little Ice Age” of the 1600s, the peak of which was called the “Maunder Minimum,” a 70-year period when sunspots became extremely rare.
The Little Ice Age is a controversial topic among scientist, with some arguing that low solar activity contributed to cooler temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere and others contending atmospheric effects of volcanic eruptions pushed temperatures lower.

JetBlue launches more daily Nassau flights

JetBlue has officially launched its newest expansion of service in the Caribbean region.
The New York City-based carrier has begun operating two additional daily flights between Fort Lauderdale and Nassau, Bahamas.
The service, which launched at the beginning of the month, represents the latest addition for what has become the fastest-growing air carrier in the Caribbean.
The new flights mean a total of five flights per day between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport, up from three flights a day previously.
The new flights include an early 7:52 AM outbound flight from Fort Lauderdale, which could significantly help connections to the Out Islands of the Bahamas through Nassau.
JetBlue’s 2016 Caribbean push has seen the addition of new Mint Cabin service on flights to destinations including Aruba, Barbados, St Maarten and Grenada, expanded service to destinations like Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and new routes to destinations including Barbados.

Hurricane Earl impacted more than 110,000 children in Belize: UNICEF

BELIZE CITY, Fri. Aug. 5, 2016–The frightfulness of howling winds and pounding rains emanating from a fierce hurricane such as Earl is enough to traumatize a child. In fact, according to a report released today by the United Nations’ Children’s Fund (UNICEF), three-fourths of Belize’s children, amounting to more than 110,000 children, 27,000 of them being younger than age 5, were affected by Hurricane Earl.
The hurricane struck Belize on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning with its impacts being felt along a span of about 150 miles, covering most of Belize, with impacts concentrated across four of Belize’s six districts.
“The damage caused by Hurricane Earl has put the safety—and even lives—of Belize’s most vulnerable children in immediate danger,” said UNICEF Belize representative Ivan Yerovi.
UNICEF said that it has conducted an initial assessment of damage caused by Earl in some of the most vulnerable communities located in Southside Belize City.
“Staff members on the ground reported that hundreds of families have been forced to seek cover with relatives, neighbors or in government shelters. Many families have lost their houses and belongings to flash flooding and winds of up to 80 mph,” it added.
Although many families sought cover before the storm hit, some felt forced to stay in their homes as they feared for their children’s safety in community shelters due to the level of alcohol consumption and crowds,” the UNICEF report said.
“However, now that their houses have been destroyed, they have been left with no choice but to stay in these shelters,” it added.
“Our urgent priorities are to get children and families who have lost their homes into a safe child-friendly environment where they can access clean water, and get children back to learning,” said Yerovi.
UNICEF notes that, “Lack of access to clean water, poor sanitation, and the risk of mudslides, along with sightings of alligators and snakes in flooded areas, threaten the safety of the country’s most vulnerable children.”
UNICEF said that it has been working around the clock to give children and families who have been cut off from basic services access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (CNN)Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte and three other US swimmers were safe and cooperating with police Sunday after being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro, the U.S. Olympic Committee said.
One of the bandits reportedly put a gun to Lochte’s forehead.
Lochte and fellow swimmers Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen had left a hospitality house hosted by France early Sunday in a taxi bound for the Olympic Village.
The vehicle was “stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings,” said USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky.
Appearing on NBC, Lochte offered chilling details.
“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a police badge, no lights, no nothing — just a police badge and they pulled us over,” Lochte told NBC. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground — they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like we didn’t do anything wrong, so — I’m not getting down on the ground.
“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.”
“I think they’re all shaken up,” Lochte’s mother, Ileana Lochte, told USA Today.
Lochte released a statement thanking family, friends, and fans for their support.
“While it is true that my teammates and I were victims of a robbery early Sunday morning, what is most important is that we are safe and unharmed,” he said.

Cayman Islands Liquor Licence Holders: Remember your 19 August deadline
Liquor licence holders – including those with music and dancing licenses – are reminded of the Friday, 19 August deadline to apply for licence renewals.
They also are reminded that before they can apply for a renewal, their premises must be inspected by relevant Government agencies. Depending on licensees’ particular operations, these inspections may include the Fire Service, Department of Environmental Health, Planning Department, and Port Authority.
To help speed up the process, the Planning Department has advised that licensees must have inspections done by private, licensed plumbers and/or electricians. These inspections are then submitted to the Planning Department for approval.
The Planning Department added that there are a few exceptions. For example, package licences (for retail outlets such as stores and warehouses) do not require electrical or plumbing inspections.
Only complete renewal applications, with either inspection certificates or proof of inspection requests, that are submitted by the 19 August deadline will be heard at the Liquor Licensing Board’s annual session on 30 September.

Cayman Islands: LCCL applicants must advise TBL board of Caymanian participation
In order to ensure that the law is upheld, procedural changes for the Local Companies (Control) Licence Law (LCCL) will come into effect on 1 September 2016.
The LCCL requires foreign investors to publish ads that solicit Caymanian participation in their potential business endeavours. In these ads, Caymanians are asked to inform the foreign investor of their interest, in writing; however, as of 1 September, Caymanians also must supply a copy of that letter directly to the Trade and Business Licensing Board.
Also, when submitting their applications to the board, foreign investors must include copies of the two local newspaper ads, published in accordance with section 11 (4) (e) of the law, that solicited Caymanian participation.
‘These procedural changes will help the board to know if the applicant has complied fully with the LCCL’, said Minister of Commerce Wayne Panton.
LCCL applications must be submitted in person at the Business Licensing Counter, on the first floor of the Government Administration Building. The counter is open Mondays to Fridays, between 9:00am and 4:00pm. In addition to the two newspaper ads, applications must be accompanied by due diligence such as a police clearance, copies of passports, references, and the relevant fees.

Early Watercolours
Rarely displayed watercolour paintings from the early collections of the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) and the Cayman Islands National Museum (CINM) will be on show at the National Gallery throughout summer. The temporary exhibition titled, A Legacy of Light features a wide selection of landscapes, seascapes and architectural studies by both established and lesser-known artists from the Cayman Islands. The exhibition opens to the public 1 July 2016 and ends 16 September 2016.
