Colombian national goes to jail for sex crimes in Cayman Islands
Michell Anderson Garcia (26), a Colombian national, received a 12 year jail sentence on Wednesday (Aug 31) by Justice Michael Mettyear at Cayman Islands Grand Court.
Garcia pleaded guilty to multiple sex offences that included sexually assaulting a 5-year-old child, raping a teenage girl and possessing a collection of over 1,000 pornographic images of children.
Because of his early guilty plea the judge discounted his sentence from 18 years to 12.
Justice Mettyear said Garcia’s conduct was “despicable and depraved”.
The Cayman Reporter shifts focus to digital

The Cayman Reporter will also continue to offer well-priced and high-value display ads in the semi-weekly print editions while also developing new on-line and digital advertising options for our valued clients.

The shaky, 10-second spot for Bulova, a New York-based watch company, aired right before a Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies baseball game and cost $9.

5 passengers killed in Alaska mid-air plane crash

Two small planes carrying a total of five passengers collided in mid-air in Alaska Wednesday morning, authorities said.
All five people are dead, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. local time about 60 miles north of the city of Bethel, Alaska National Guard spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Candis Olmstead said in a statement.
“The aircraft involved were a Hageland Aviation Cessna 208 Caravan with three individuals on board and a Renfro’s Alaska Adventures Piper PA-18 Super Cub with two individuals on board,” Olmstead said.
Olmstead said the crash occurred about 6 miles northwest of Russian Mission, a remote community in the southwest of the state along the Yukon River.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Hageland did not immediately respond to a request for information.
An Alaska Army National Guard helicopter ferrying medics was arriving at the crash site, Olmstead said. Alaska State Troopers were also en route.
MEPs back continued cooperation with African, Caribbean, Pacific states

The European Parliament’s development committee has approved a new report about the future of EU relations with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states in view of the soon-to-expire Cotonou Agreement.
Set to expire in 2020, renegotiations will soon be underway. According to the European Parliament rapporteur and author of the report, Norbert Neuser, who is also the development coordinator for the Socialists & Democrats, a broad majority of the MEPs in the committee backed continued cooperation.
“Despite all the difficulties faced, this approach is bearing fruit today and shell be legally binding,” he said. “We retained the advantage of having a large number of countries working together – China or the US would jump at the chance of having this sort of platform with ACP countries! On the other hand, in order to be more effective, we suggested an architecture that ensures tailor-made co-operation between smaller groups of countries. The human rights perspective will also be given more visibility and enforcement through a biennial reporting mechanism.”
Another goal is to help partner countries to become economically independent.
“Trade is an important part of ACP-EU relations,” explained Neuser. “The integration of ACP countries into the world economy has advanced in recent decades thanks to their co-operation with the EU, but more needs to be done to include them in international value chains. A new agreement must include legally binding human rights, social and environmental standards as a basis for future economic trade agreements.”

Venezuela expands economic presence in the Caribbean
Caracas, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) As part of the actions promoted by the Venezuelan government to diversify its economy, different ministries are focused today on presenting its exportable offer to other countries.
The Caribbean is precisely one of the markets to take into account due to its geographical proximity, Foreign Trade Minister, Jesus Farias, said in a meeting with businessmen of Bonaire and the Netherlands.
During the meeting -held in the island of Bonaire- the minister presented the possibilities and potential for investment in many productive sectors of Venezuela.
The meeting sought to strengthen and expand the commercial ties between Venezuela and Bonaire. It also enhance the development of joint projects aimed at promoting exports of raw materials and manufactured goods produced in the South American nation.
Farias talked of boosting Export -one of the mainstays of the government economic agenda- and stressed the need to continue the promotion of foreign investment.
Venezuela seeks export diversification and reduce oil dependence, open foreign investment with high competitive ability in the international market and reduce paperwork to place those products abroad, he said.

The British comedy, written by Sir Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, was fist broadcast by BBC Television in the 1980s has now been adapted to the Cayman stage by Chuck and Barrie Quappe. As the Cayman Parliamentary system is based on Whitehall, any of the situations will be undeniably familiar to all that live in Cayman!

The Pirates Week Festival Office is inviting participants for the annual Food Festival to submit their vendor applications for the below dates/times:

All vendors must comply with the rules and regulations set by the Pirates Week Festival Office and must present a valid Food Handling Certificate for all persons handing food by the 31st October.
