Cayman Islands Customs Department issues strong warning after arrest of passenger for disorderly conduct
This past week saw the Customs Department arresting a traveller for Disorderly Conduct after he arrived on a flight from the USA.
Providing details, Acting Deputy Collector Jeff Jackson said, “On Monday, 22nd August 2016, a male passenger arrived on an American Airlines flight from Miami, Florida. After clearing through Immigration and arriving within the Customs controlled area, the passenger produced his Declaration Card but had failed to declare a particular item.
“The passenger was advised and given back the declaration card so that the item could be properly declared. The passenger then took the declaration card and wrote ‘indecent words’ on it and returned it to the Customs officer. The passenger was then arrested and cautioned and subsequently charged with the offence of Disorderly Conduct. Customs Officers understand the challenges of border protection and we will continue our important role in defeating crime and protecting our borders.”
Acting Collector of Customs Marlon Bodden said, “We want to make it abundantly clear that the Customs Department will not tolerate any passenger(s) conducting themselves in any rude or unacceptable manner through their words or conduct and we will take action towards this type of behaviour. Passengers should always be mindful of the consequences of going to Court, which could attract cost, expenses, missed days from work and may sabotage future background checks.”

Cayman Islands police appeal for assistance
Help the Police to keep the lid on property crimes, in particular burglaries by checking the security of your premises when at or away from home. While most home owners and other commercial properties have security prevention systems in place several residential burglaries have taken place by the occupier leaving insecure windows and doors thereby providing easy access for opportunistic burglars.
The Police have established a burglary task force and to date there has been a 34% decrease in burglaries over the same period last year but needs the help of the community to drive burglaries and other property crimes, including thefts further down.
This includes securing vehicles and not leaving valuables inside.
We also ask that if you see something unusual say something. Together we can make our communities safer.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact 911 or the nearest Police Station.
Turks and Caicos political candidates warned against ‘treating’

PROVIDENCIALES, TCI — Political campaigning is well under way in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) for yet to be announced general elections and the supervisor of elections has reminded candidates, political parties or anyone associated with them of the need to comply with the provisions of the Elections Ordinance and in particular, what is expected by virtue of Section 70 of the Ordinance, which reads:
“Every person who corruptly, by himself or by any other person, either before, during or after an election, directly or indirectly, gives or provides or pays, wholly or in part, the expenses of giving or providing any food, drink, entertainment, or provision to or for any person for the purpose of corruptly influencing that person or any other person, to vote or to refrain from voting at such election, or on account of such person or any other person having voted or refrained from voting at such election and this behaviour is known as ‘treating’ is illegal.”
Supervisor of Elections, Dudley Lewis, also explained that ‘treating’ has been illegal for many years, although in past campaigning leading up to general elections some people have chosen to ignore it, and such behaviour he said is no longer being ignored.
The person offering this kind of inducement is committing a serious criminal offence and so is any member of the public who accepts a gift or cash.
The supervisor also warned that he will follow up on all reports received and will not hesitate to collaborate with the police to initiate a criminal investigation.
“Political party leaders and candidates should make it known throughout their organization or campaign machinery of the need to comply with the law so as to uphold the law and ensure a level playing field between campaigns in the best interest of voters in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Lewis emphasized.

Despite the fact that USA put in a good performance, this was pretty much expected. At the end of the day, USMNT took care of business in every department and aside from a 5 minute spell in the second half, the home team never really bothered them. An important factor to take away is that Klinsmann really has a few offensive weapons at his disposal, and this is without Dempsey or Zardes. Bobby Wood is incredibly consistent, Kjlestan is an assist king and Bedoya fits in his role very nicely in the middle of the park. But I have to say, today was all about Pulisic. He was on the field for 15-20 minutes and really caused so many headaches. At 17-years-old, in a domestic league that prides itself on developing young players…the sky is the limit.

Groovefest cancels Caribbean Festival, company goes into liquidation

Ticket buyers won’t be offered a refund…
Groovefest, which was set to take place at a resort on the Barcelo Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from Sunday 4th to Sunday 11th September, has been cancelled.
The festival issued an “urgent message” on their website last night (1st September), which said that poor ticket sales had led to the cancellation.
The statement also says that ticket buyers will be offered no refunds, whilst the company behind the festival has now effectively ceased trading and has formally instructed insolvency practitioners to assist in placing the company into liquidation.

Travelers forecast to shell out big bucks in the Caribbean this year

News Americas, NEW YORK,NY, Fri. Sept. 2,2016:Travelers to the Caribbean are forecast to be spending more this year according to latest data from the World Travel & Tourism Council, a global organization of travel industry executives promoting travel and tourism worldwide.
According to WTTC research, leisure travel spending (inbound and domestic) is expected to grow to USD
37.7 billion across the Caribbean this year. That’s a 2.4 percent increase by 2026, leisure spending could reach USD 53 billion or and a 3.5 spike.
The business travel market spending is expected to grow to USD4.4on or some 2.8 percent this year. By 2026, that is forecast to spike to USD 5.9bn or a rise by 3.1 percent.
Meanwhile, domestic travel within the Caribbean is also forecast to grow to USD 11.6bn this year and rise to USD15.3bn in 2026 and the direct Contribution of Travel & Tourism to GOP is forecast to rise by 2.4 percent this year and by 3.4 percent by 2026.

Artist illustrates the weird, goofy and gross pickup lines she gets online

Illustrator Emmie Tsumura is documenting the fascinating world of online dating — one pickup line at a time.
Tsumura began her latest project, “OK Cucumber,” after ending a long-term relationship. “I finally started dating online to get out of my rut,” she told Mashable. “But it was really hard and pretty depressing at times.”
Right before Tsumura was about to throw in the towel, she decided to draw a few of the messages she received on apps like Tinder and OKCupid. She also drew each sender’s profile photo.
Then, on a whim, she sent the illustrations to a friend, who loved them.
“She laughed so hard that I knew I had to draw more,” Tsumura said.
Now, the Toronto-based artist documents the brightest, basest and most bizarre in online come-hithers, posting each piece to her Instagram account. Some are clever. A few (“I haven’t had a PopTart in forever”) are hilariously random. Others read like online versions of sidewalk catcalls.
Despite the lewdness of some of the messages, Tsumura insists that the project isn’t intended to help her “cope” with online dating. Instead, she wants to create what she calls a “graphic survey” of her own experience — which does, in the end, prompt her to look at the messages through a different lens.
“Illustration has helped me to take a step back and observe what’s happening,” she said. “We are all reacting to what each person is putting out there.”

Popular Jamaican reggae artiste has visa cancelled after carrying marijuana infused fluid on flight

JAMAICA OBSERVER – Luciano’s United States visa was cancelled by American law enforcement officers last weekend.
The artiste, who was scheduled to perform on the Philadelphia Jerk Festival at Fairmount Park on Sunday, took to social media to advise promoters and fans of the development.
“I regret to announce that whilst crossing the border from Canada into America by air on August 25th, 2016, I underwent an abnormal interrogation during which my personal hand luggage was searched. During the search, a mixture that I normally use as a herb medicine for my throat was found and after numerous tests it was claimed to be illegal because it contained cannabis extracts. The herbal liquid was a very small amount (less than one gramme), but as a result my visas were revoked and I was denied entry into the US.
“I sincerely regret the inconvenience and disappointment that this will cause as I am also deeply devastated. Please pray for me while I face yet another major obstacle in my life,” Luciano’s post read it part.
The singer said he would, however, appeal the cancellation.

As the Cayman Parliamentary system is based on Whitehall, any of the situations will be undeniably familiar to all that live in Cayman!

Cayman Islands Pirates Week calls for food vendors
The Pirates Week Festival Office is inviting participants for the annual Food Festival to submit their vendor applications for the below dates/times:

Vendor applications must be submitted beginning on Monday 1st August, 2016 to the Pirates Week Office on Shedden Road, George Town (upstairs next to KFC). Vendor space is limited therefore applications must be submitted as soon as possible after the opening date above. Deadline for submission is Monday 31st October.
All vendors must comply with the rules and regulations set by the Pirates Week Festival Office and must present a valid Food Handling Certificate for all persons handing food by the 31st October.
