From Jamaica Observer

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A sixth person has died after contracting the H1N1 virus.

The Ministry of Health has not released her name, but acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Winston De La Haye told OBSERVER ONLINE on Saturday that the patient is a doctor who had worked with the Ministry of Health for more than 30 years.

Dr De La Haye said that, like others who have died from the virus, she was a patient who had other chronic medical conditions.

She is the second doctor to die after contracting the virus. The first was 50-year-old Suzanna Roye who died in February.

Up to yesterday, 187 tests for H1N1, or swine flu, have been done with 69 confirmed positive.

U.S. Air Force General Lori Robinson has been selected as the next head of the U.S. military’s Northern Command, which would make her the first woman to head a U.S. combatant command, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday.

The position, which is subject to Senate confirmation, is one of the most senior in the U.S. military and would make Robinson — who now leads U.S. air forces in the Pacific — the top general overseeing activities in North America.

“General Robinson, it just so happens, would also be the first ever female combatant commander,” Carter told an event in Washington hosted by Politico.

Two earthquakes rattle Caribbean islandsFrom Jamaica Observer

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Several Caribbean countries were on Saturday rattled by at least two earthquakes, according to the Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Initial reports indicate the quakes were felt in Saint Martin, St Eustatius, Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia, and St Vincent.

Caribbean lagging in shift to renewable energy

From Barbados Today

President of the Caribbean Development Bank Dr Warren Smith is lamenting the Caribbean’s slow pace in shifting towards renewable energy.

Delivering a lecture on the topic ‘Regulating Utilities in Small Island Developing States – Lessons for the Caribbean’, Dr Smith said renewable energy is the most promising option for addressing the region’s current energy security challenge.

But he noted that currently, the electricity generation capacity derived from renewable energy in CARICOM countries is less than 10 percent, compared to regional targets of 20 percent by 2017, and 28 percent by 2022.

“The major barrier, in my view, to rapid expansion of renewable energy generation in the Caribbean, remains that of the monopoly control over generation by the incumbent integrated electric utilities in several instances.

“Across the region the potential for electricity generation from a range of renewable sources cannot be realised because of the lack of network access,” Dr Smith said.

He stated that only a few Caribbean countries have made progress in terms of the level of renewable energy investment in the electricity sector.

“This has been approved through the pursuit of varying degrees of legislative and regulatory reforms. Barbados, Belize and Jamaica are examples where such progress has been made,” Smith said.

US Jury awards Hulk Hogan $115 million in sex tape case against Gawker

From All Access Music Group

Hulk Hogan was awarded $115 million in damages with the jury indicating that they want to add more for punitive damages in his suit against GAWKER MEDIA for the latter’s publication at GAWKER.COM of a sex tape depicting the former pro wrestler and the estranged wife of radio host BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE.

HOGAN (real name TERRY BOLLEA) sued GAWKER, founder NICK DENTON, and then-editor A.J. DAULERIO for posting the video, which BUBBA has maintained was stolen from his possession by a former staffer. BUBBA’s involvement led to GAWKER’s attorneys trying to call him to testify, but BUBBA was able to get the court to keep him off the stand; he had said that he would plead the Fifth Amendment if required to testify.

Coast Guard: 9 Cuban migrants die, 18 rescued off Florida

By BRENDAN FARRINGTON, ASSOCIATED PRESS From San Francisco Chronicle

MIAMI (AP) — Nine Cuban migrants died at sea and 18 others were rescued by a cruise ship after their 30-foot boat was found about 130 miles from the Florida coast, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The migrants were severely dehydrated when they were found Friday and said they had been at sea 22 days. The bodies of those who didn’t make it were placed overboard, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney. The survivors were in bad condition.

“They could barely walk off the vessel itself,” Barney said. “They were weak and they were shaking.”

The rescue by the Royal Caribbean ship took place about 130 miles west of Marco Island in southwest Florida. The migrants were in a “rustic” boat that was about 30-feet long, Barney said.

They were found by the cruise ship Brilliance of the Seas at about 7 a.m. Friday. The migrants boarded the ship and received food, water and medical treatment, Royal Caribbean said.

The company reported the event to the Coast Guard and made the decision to bring the migrants to its next port of call, Cozumel, Mexico. The cruise had departed Tampa on Thursday.

The rescue comes as President Barack Obama travels to Cuba to meet with President Raul Castro during a 2½-day visit that begins Sunday. The visit is part of Obama’s efforts to normalize relations with Cuba. While the U.S. has eased travel restrictions to the island Cuba, many Cubans still risk their lives to reach the United States.

“The Coast Guard has observed a steady increase in illegal maritime migration attempts from Cuba to the southeastern U.S. since the U.S. announcement of normalized diplomatic relations with Cuba in December 2014,” the Coast Guard said in a press release. Last month, 269 Cuban migrants attempted to reach U.S. shores and about 2,420 have tried to reach the United States by sea since last October.

On the same day Royal Caribbean rescued the group it found, the Coast Guard returned 42 other migrants to Cuba after they were picked up in the Florida Straits in two separate incidents earlier in the week.
