Cayman Islands recall Purina Dog Food
From Foster’s Food Fair
Please see below re: Purina Dog Food Recall. The product has been pulled from our shelves, and customer who have purchased the recalled product may bring it back to any Foster’s location for a full refund.
March 23rd, 2016 Foster’s Food Fair-IGA would like to announce that Purina has voluntarily issued a recall for a number of their tubs of wet dog food due to the product not meeting quality standards. Through their own testing, the company discovered that the food may not contain the recommended level of added vitamins and minerals.
Foster’s Food Fair-IGA locations do carry the Purina Wet Dog Food 10 oz Tub; and the affected products have been pulled from the shelves.
The recall includes the following brands with both a “best before” date range of June 2017 to August 2017 and production code range starting with the first four digits of 5363 to 6054:
Beneful Prepared Meals Wet Dog Food 10-oz. Tubs (all varieties)
Beneful Chopped Blends Wet Dog Food 10-oz. Tubs (all varieties)
Pro Plan Savory Meals Wet Dog Food 10-oz. Tubs (limited to five varieties)
No other Purina products or sizes are included.
Dog owners should check both the “Best Before” date and production code on the bottom of each 10-oz. tub. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We encourage all customers who have purchased this product from any of our Foster’s Food Fair-IGA locations to return the affected product for a full refund. Please discontinue feeding the food to your dog. If you have a 10-oz tub that is not listed as part of the recall, you can and should continue feeding it to your dog.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out by email ([email protected]) or by phone (345-945-3663).

Cayman Islands: Passing of Syrian Refugee
A male Syrian national, who was granted refugee status by the Cayman Islands, has died in Jamaica where he was receiving medical treatment.
The man had claimed asylum in July 2013, while passing through Grand Cayman in transit from Cuba to Jamaica.
Following an extensive assessment, officials deemed that he qualified for asylum under the 1951 UN convention on Refugees and he received refugee status in 2014.
Following recent admission to George Town Hospital he was later transported to Jamaica for further care, and passed away while there.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is working with the Jamaican Consular office in the Cayman Islands to coordinate burial arrangements.
Officials note that the deceased was one of two Syrian nationals to be granted refugee status by the Cayman Islands.
Cayman Islands mother found guilty of daughter’s murder
In what many believe is a surprising decision Cayman Islands Grand Court Judge Alastair Malcolm found Tamara Butler knowingly stabbed and killed her six-year-old daughter last year finding her guilty of murder.
The judge rejected the evidence of two psychiatrists that Butler was psychotic and suffering from schizophrenia and instead seemed to value the opinion more of the Crown’s the crown’s psychiatrist, Dr Myers, who was described as an academic rather than a practicing physician. The judge also appeared to discount the opinion of Dr Arline McGill from the Cayman Islands Hospital regarding Butler’s condition the night of the killing.

Western Union expands to Cuba
By Jamaica Observer From St Lucia Online
JAMAICA OBSERVER – The Western Union (WU) company, a global payments services provider, announced today that it will launch remittance services from across the world into Cuba following United States regulatory and policy changes that allow Cubans and non-Cubans to send remittances via Western Union to the island.
Cubans currently reside in as many as 72 countries worldwide, WU stated.
Cash remittances to Cuba in 2013 reached US$2.8 billion with 90 per cent originating from the US. Remittances reach 62 per cent of Cuban households, sustain about 90 per cent of the retail market and provide thousands of jobs, the company said in a release on its new direct service on Monday.
For the first time, Cubans and other citizens worldwide will join their US counterparts to send remittances into Cuba using Western Union’s cross-border payments platform.
People from the US have had the opportunity to send money to Cuba since 1999, but just from the US. In a couple of weeks, any citizen of the world will be able to do it too, which means a great opportunity for Cubans with relatives in Caribbean, Latin Aamerican, European, and Asian countries.

A new $1.5 billion Caribbean hotel project
The Caribbean has a new development hotspot: Antigua and Barbuda.
The twin-island country has signed another major development deal, this time a project by Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Iraq, Ahmed Abbas Alewi, who is spearheading a major mixed-use development.
The project will be done in phases, with a total of investment of around $1.5 billion USD.
Located on 93 acres of Pensioner’s Beach in Antigua, the project will include a hotel luxury housing, a water park, an indoor mall including a movie theater, among other amenities.
Antigua Tourism Minister Asot Michael and Ambassador Ahmed Abbas Alewi
In a statement, Antigua’s Tourism Ministry said it had held talks on the potential arrival of twice-weekly flights from Baghdad through a European gateway.
Alwei has proposed this himself, as he owns two Boeing 737 aircraft.
Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Minister Asot Michael called the agreement a “huge step toward increasing tourist arrivals from the Middle East and extending Antigua and Barbuda’s global reach.”
In the past several years, Antigua has signed more large-scale hotel development deals than any other country in the Caribbean — most recently, a landmark transformation of the historic Half Moon Bay property.

Jamaica government to implement gender quotas in Parliament
By Caribbean360 From St Lucia News Online
CARIBBEAN360 – Government intends to introduce legislated gender quotas to address the lack of proportional representation of women in Parliament and other areas of the society.
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange said the move is part of Temporary Special Measures (TSMs) on the part of the Government to accelerate equality between men and women.
It is in keeping with an action plan for gender equity and sustainable development in Jamaica, to be rolled out in the short term.
Legislated quotas will also be introduced to address the under-representation of women in local authorities and other positions of leadership, and to increase the participation of women in the relevant branches of governance and socio-economic organizations.
Grange said continued support will be provided to women’s groups and gender-related entities, such as the Jamaica Household Workers Union (JHWU).

Grenada government denies reports of three gastroenteritis infant deaths
By Caribbean News Now contributor
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — The ministry of health in Grenada has denied reports that three babies had died as a result of gastroenteritis at the General Hospital last weekend.
In a press statement on Wednesday, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) said it had learnt of the deaths of three children over the weekend at the General Hospital, reportedly from gastroenteritis.
The NDC called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of the minister for health, Nickolas Steele.
However, according to the government, one infant/toddler (and not three babies as claimed by the NDC) died on the weekend in question after being cared for at the General Hospital for a period of three days.
An autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death of the infant has been undertaken and the revived Death Review Committee met to determine the circumstances and events surrounding the untimely passing of the infant at the hospital.
