Cayman Islands: NIKO’S FOSTER APPEAL

Niko is a sweet guy, who is in a tremendous amount of pain right now and desperately needs our help. This handsome chap has sustained an awful injury to his front leg and sadly we are faced with amputation. He is estimated to be a year old and is a neutered, friendly male. He is a medium size Cayman shepherd blend.

Niko’s surgery is scheduled for tomorrow and so we are looking for a place for him to stay where he can recover from his amputation and adapt to his disability, so we can get to know him and his personality and get him on to his happily ever after in a forever home.

Do you have space in your home and heart for this poor soul to come and crash for a while? We estimate the foster period to be approximately 2 months, while he heals, adapts and we appeal for his forever home. Food, and all necessary supplies will be provided for the duration of foster care.

He does not seem to be a fussy guy and first impressions lead us to believe he is a true “island boy” grateful for a bed some food and a little loving. He seems to get along with other dogs, He has been fine with people, even in the pain he is in, He is not very playful at the moment due to his injury but we are sure once we are on the road to recovery it will be wonderful to watch him shine once again.

Cayman Islands Governor lends support to the DG’s 5K Challenge

Her Excellency Governor Helen Kilpatrick was today (Wed Apr 20) presented with her DG’s 5K Challenge t-shirt by Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson.

The Governor adds to a growing list of public figures and local celebrities in support of the event including Miss Cayman Islands, Monyque Brooks; Cayman Islands Olympians, Ronald Forbes and Cydonie Mothersill and Hon. Jeanne Atherden, JP, MP, Minister of Health and Environment, Bermuda—who on her recent visit to the Cayman Islands also backed the cause.

Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin, JP and Deputy Premier, Hon. Moses Kirkconnell, JP also participated in last Sunday’s (17 April) Brac Challenge.

The DG’s 5K Challenge in Grand Cayman is this Sunday, 24 April at 6:30am.

The two final days of registration are Thursday 21 and Friday 22 April from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Government Administration Building (GAB).

Registration is $20 adults (14 and older), $10 for children (13 and younger).

Securities Commission to host Caribbean Group of Securities Regulators Conference

The Securities Commission of The Bahamas (the Commission) will host the 12th Annual Caribbean Group of Securities Regulators (CGSR) Conference and Workshop 20 – 22 April at the British Colonial Hilton, Nassau, Bahamas. It is anticipated that some 45 regional and international delegates and speakers will be in attendance.

The Honourable Hope Strachan, Minister of Financial Services, will bring the keynote address at the opening ceremony on 20 April. The Commission’s Chairman, Tonya Bastian-Galanis, Executive Director, Christina Rolle and Financial Sector Supervision Adviser of the Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre, Courtney Christie-Veitch will also bring remarks at the opening ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and the news media is invited to attend.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Regional Capital Market Development and Regulation”. The purpose of the conference and workshop is to engage with Caribbean regulators and share knowledge, ideas, and common experiences to develop and advance the regulation and oversight of regional securities and capital markets.

The Caribbean Group of Securities Regulators was established to create a forum for regional securities regulators to discuss issues facing Caribbean securities and financial markets. The Commission is a member of several international regulatory organizations including CGSR, the Council of Securities Regulators of the Americas (COSRA) and the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

The Commission was appointed Chair and Secretary of CGSR for 2016 – 2017, at the CGSR Conference and Annual Meeting on 23 April 2015 at Runway Bay, Jamaica.

Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service is marking its 35th anniversary with the first ever formal Corrections Week from 24-30 April.

Highlights include: A collector’s supplement in the Cayman Compass on Friday, 22 April; a service at the Church of God Chapel, Walker’s Road on Sunday 24 April at 10 a.m; the official opening of Corrections Week by Director of Prisons Neil Lavis on Monday, 25 April at 8.30 a.m.; prisoners’ work at Camana Bay Farmers & Artisans Market on Wednesday, 27 April from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m; a prison team on Cayman 27’s The Panel discussion show on Thursday 28 April at 7 p.m; a friendly football match – RCIPS v. End of March Deadline for Seafarers’/Veterans’ Updates

Seafarers, Veterans and their spouses have until 31 May 2016 to provide their current information to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.

The Ministry is in the process of updating its health insurance database and has already distributed the relevant forms.

Any seafarer, veteran or spouse who has yet to receive such a document may provide a postal address to the Ministry so that the form can be mailed to them. Once completed, forms may be dropped off or mailed to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, 3rd Floor Government Administration Building, Elgin Avenue, Grand Cayman, PO Box 131, KY1-9000.

This request was initially made in July 2015 and those Seafarers, Veterans and their spouse who have responded to the initial request need not do so again.

Failure to respond may result in the discontinuation of health insurance benefits.

 

Anglers in Cayman Islands Fishing Tournament to tag Whitetip sharks

Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament collaboration

with Guy Harvey enhances conservation work

WHO: Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF)

WHAT: Will work with anglers in the Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament to tag whitetip sharks. This is the third year anglers in the tournament are participating in the tagging study.

GHOF, which promotes ocean conservation and the development of the next generation of marine scientists and funds research and educational programs developed by universities, colleges, institutes and nonprofit organizations, cooperates with existing fishing tournaments to enhance conservation work by utilizing tournament anglers to catch sharks for tagging.

The tagging allows researchers to better understand and track migration patterns, which is essential for proper fisheries management and conservation of whitetip sharks.

Cayman Islands Treasury Cashier, office to close early Friday (22)

The Treasury Cashier will be closed to the Public at 11.30 am and the Administration Office at 12 noon on Friday, 22 April 2016 in order to facilitate a Staff Retreat. Both offices are located at Government Administration Building, Elgin Avenue.

All business transactions should be conducted as early as possible before the 11.30 am deadline.

Normal business hours will resume on Monday, 25 April 2016.

Child month cupcake war open to students in Cayman Brac

Young pastry chefs in Cayman Brac are invited to take part in the Child Month Cupcake Wars competition. Taking place on Saturday 30 April at the Layman Scott High School, the competition challenges bakers to create two cupcakes, a cupcake using fruit in the recipe and a diabetic friendly cupcake.

Bakers ages 10 – 25 years old are welcomed to participate, at no charge. The competition is sponsored by the Youth Services Unit, Kiwanis Club, Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC), Department of Children and Family Services, The Ministry of Tourism and the Layman Scott Senior High School.

The Shelter Operations 2016 Hurricane Training for Shelter Managers & District Representatives Volunteers for this year’s Hurricane Season will be held over two days on Wednesday 25 May and Thursday 26 May at the Prospect Primary School Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Registration begins promptly at 5:30 p.m.

Deadline Extended for Student Film Competition AGAIN

Budding filmmakers have a little more time to submit their stories to the Young Image Makers competition. The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, 20 April.

Hosted by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF), the competition provides youngsters with the opportunity to sharpen their technical film skills and explore their creativity.

Films can focus on any subject matter and run one to three minutes. There are two age categories of competition, Junior (10 – 13 years) and Senior (14 – 17 years).

Up to 20 films will be selected for the competition. Students who are selected will participate in workshops conducted by film professionals. The experience will culminate in a red carpet event at the Harquail Theatre, as part of the CayFilm Festival on Thursday, 30 June. All films in competition will be screened that night.

Two winners will enjoy a trip to the New York Film Academy. Winning films from previous years can be viewed online at www.youtube.com/caymanculture.
