Cricket) Aussies thrash hapless Windies to take Caribbean series

iNews b joshFrom The Standard

Australia demolished hapless West Indies on the fourth day of the second and final Test at Sabina Park on Sunday, routing the home side for 114 to win by 277 runs and take the series 2-0.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon formalized the result with the wickets of Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor off successive balls early in the afternoon session.

That was after Mitchell Johnson had ended the resistance of Denesh Ramdin, having the West Indies captain caught by his opposite number, Michael Clarke, at slip for a top score of 29.

For Johnson, his second wicket of the innings lifted his career tally to 291, drawing him level with Craig McDermott, who is now Australia’s bowling coach, as the joint-fifth most successful bowler in Test cricket for his country.

Steve Smith earned the man of the match award for his innings of 199 and 54 not out.

Before lunch, Josh Hazlewood (Pictured) lifted his match haul to seven wickets in removing Darren Bravo and Jermaine Blackwood.

Mitchell Starc, who started the rout by removing both openers in the first over of the innings late on the third day, got the ball rolling again for the tourists in the morning when he bowled Shane Dowrich off his pads after 19 minutes’ play.

Hazlewood, who took 12 wickets in the two Tests, was named man of the series.

Despite struggling to find his rhythm throughout the match, Johnson joined the rampant wicket-takers when he breached the defence of Shai Hope for the sixth wicket of the innings.

Jason Holder, who took on the Australians with the bat and verbally during an entertaining first innings of 82 not out the day before, failed to have any impact the second time around.

The promising all-rounder pushed a straightforward catch to Starc at short midwicket off Shane Watson 15 minutes before the interval.

Starting the morning at 16 for two, Bravo and Dowrich were kept under a virtual state of siege by the outstanding pace and perseverance of Starc and Hazlewood.

Despite his status as the most experienced West Indies batsman in the match, given the unavailability of Marlon Samuels, Bravo struggled to get the ball away.

He eventually fell for just 11 off 49 deliveries as Shaun Marsh held his second low catch of the innings at gully, this time off the bowling of Hazlewood.

Just a few minutes earlier, Starc’s unerring accuracy proved too much for Dowrich, the right-hander being bowled off his pads.

No-one in the middle-order was able to resist the Australians, leaving the captain and the tail to somehow save face for a side on the cusp of a humiliating defeat to follow their nine-wicket loss inside three days in the first Test in Dominica.

Their effort ultimately proved in vain.—AFP

Methodist Church appoints first Bishop

From Jamaica Observer

THE Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas has inducted its first Connexional Bishop, the Rev Otto Ogden Wade.

This ends the 255 years practice of referring to the head of the Church as either chairman or president.

The induction on Sunday, May 31 followed the decision of the 38th Connexional Conference meeting in Georgetown, Guyana, on Friday, May 29, 2015, that the heads of the Connexion and each of the eight Districts (Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands, Belize/Honduras, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Panama/Costa Rica, and South Caribbean) will be referred to as “Bishop”.

The use of the title “Bishop” brings the Methodist Church in line with the biblical naming of the threefold ministry of deacon, presbyter and bishop.

In a moving ceremony at the Bedford Methodist Church, Rev Wade was inducted by Bishop Kenneth Carter of the South Eastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church, USA.

The eight District Bishops participated in the induction which was witnessed by a large congregation of Methodists of all ages from across the Guyana District, and delegates and visitors from 16 countries in the Caribbean, the Americas and the United Kingdom.

U.S. rugby teams qualify for Rio Olympics

Nick Zaccardi From NCB Olympics

The U.S. men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams qualified for the first Olympic rugby tournaments since 1924 by winning continental qualifying championships in Cary, N.C., on Sunday.

The U.S. men, who finished sixth in this past season’s World Series (with the top four nations earning Olympic spots), beat Canada 21-5 in the North American Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Sevens Championship game.

The U.S. women, fifth in the World Series, topped Mexico 88-0 in its NACRA title game earlier Sunday. Canada’s women already qualified for the Olympics by finishing second in the World Series.

The NACRA winners joined the top four World Series nations in the 2016 Olympic rugby tournament, plus Olympic host Brazil and the South American continental qualifying winners (Argentina men, Colombia women).

Five more nations each will qualify via other continental qualifiers and global last-chance tournaments.

The U.S. men and women have at least outside shots at medals in Rio de Janeiro, given their places in the World Series standings. Australia, Fiji, Great Britain, New Zealand and South Africa are world powers.

The U.S. won the last two Olympic rugby tournaments in 1920, when there were two nations competing, and 1924, when there were three.

Back then, the Olympic rugby format was 15 players per side, without a separate women’s tournament.

CDB to discuss innovation and host workshop on PPPs at Caribbean Growth Forum

Bridgetown, Barbados – June 12, 2015) The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) will join government ministers, officials and development partners in exploring better ways of promoting and harnessing growth, during the Third Regional Caribbean Growth Forum (CGF). The event takes place on June 16-17, 2015 in St. Lucia at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort and will focus on innovative ways of enhancing competitiveness, supporting growth and creating jobs in the region.

Dr. Justin Ram, CDB’s Director of Economics, will participate in a session on Entrepreneurship and Innovation on Wednesday June 17, looking at the links between innovation, growth and new market opportunities for Caribbean economies.

“If the region is to seriously address the issues of productivity and competitiveness, we must begin to deepen our human resources, and focus on how to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship among our citizens. This event will allow for discussions on enabling our environments for growth, and ensuring that we foster the right ecosystems for success,” said Dr. Ram.

Prior to the official start of the Forum, a high-level discussion on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) will take place on Monday June 15.

Brian Samuel, Public-Private Partnership Coordinator at CDB, will present on, “The Risks and Rewards of PPPs,” examining how governments can navigate the complexities of PPPs and improve the chance of successful outcomes. This will be followed by a panel discussion, “Sharing PPP Experiences in the Caribbean,” and an overview of services available through CDB.

“As the private and public sector collaborate to implement reforms that promote growth in the Caribbean, PPPs are emerging as an important part of the conversation. This workshop is an opportunity to share knowledge on some of the key issues associated with PPPs, including how to build governments’ technical capacity in managing PPP projects, and how to better leverage private sector financing and knowledge,” said Mr. Samuel.

Last month, CDB announced the establishment of a US$1.2 million Regional PPP Support Facility, which provides practical and advisory assistance to regional governments in developing and implementing PPPs. In 2014 CDB published the study “Public Private Partnerships in the Caribbean: Building on Early Lessons.”

3rd ODI: Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor centuries help New Zealand beat England, Lead Series 2-1

iNews b kane-williamson-ross-taylorReported by: Agence France-Presse From NDTV SP RTS

Kane Williamson (118) and Ross Taylor (110) shared a record New Zealand third-wicket ODI stand of 206 to help Kiwis win the match by three wickets.

Southampton: Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor both scored hundreds in a record-breaking stand as New Zealand beat England by three wickets in the third one-day international at the Rose Bowl on Sunday to go 2-1 up in the five-match series. New Zealand, chasing 303 for victory, were struggling at 36 for two.

But a stand of 206 between Williamson and Taylor turned the tide, although England dropped both batsmen with Taylor given several reprieves.

Williamson made 118 and Taylor 110 — his second century in as many matches after his unbeaten 119 during New Zealand’s 13 run-win at The Oval on Friday levelled the series at 1-1.

That match also saw Williamson and Taylor share a partnership of 121.

But their stand at the Rose Bowl was a New Zealand record for the third wicket in all ODI cricket, surpassing the 180 put on by Adam Parore and Ken Rutherford against India at Vaodara in 1994.

New Zealand lost a couple of late wickets and it needed a four by Tim Southee off Ben Stokes to see the World Cup finalists complete victory with an over to spare.

The series continues at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

CUF assesses Caribbean urban development

By GIS – St Lucia

GIS – Efforts to advance land and urban management in the Caribbean region is underway, as the Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF) seeks to address specific policy issues with the Caribbean urban sector.

At the fifth CUF held on Wednesday, Minister for Physical Development, Housing and Urban Renewal, Senator Hon. Stanley Felix said urban development must be examined within the context of the island system.

“This examination must take into consideration factors such as our resource based population growth and distribution, social needs, housing status and employment demands,” he said. “Our urban centers must be responsive to the demands of the population as well as the desires of visitors and commercial opportunities. The success of our urban centers will therefore be measured by the number of persons who voluntarily choose the city as the best option to live work play and visit. This then brings us to the much focused area of land use planning.” Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Development, Joanna Raynold-Arthurton highlighted the benefits of CUF5 to the Saint Lucian public.

“As the Ministry of Physical Development embarks on the launch of major initiatives such as the National Sight and Services Program, the revision of the 2007 National Land Policy, the development of the National Land Use Plan and the revision of the Draft Building Code, this forum creates opportunity for professional development for Saint Lucian planning professionals and students that will enhance their capacity to make more meaningful contributions. The forum will also set the stage for increased awareness and education of the public on the importance of land management and other land use planning issues.”

The theme for the CUF5 is “Island System Planning.” The theme takes into account the unique pattern of urbanization in the Caribbean, and the tailored solutions that are needed to address them.

This Caribbean Country’s clever plan to deal with sea turtle poachers

By Dana Niland From Caribbean Journal

Dominica is the permanent habitat of the Hawksbill and Greenback species of sea turtle, and the seasonal habitat of the Leatherback species.

According to conservationist Errol Harris, the population of these turtles has been drastically declining, and that another species of turtle that formerly came to Dominica’s shores has vanished entirely.

Forester Charles Watty says that humans are the number one predator of these turtles. Poachers market illegally-snatched turtles — which can reach weights up to 800 pounds — at prices of $10-$13 per pound.

Watty has advised that the country’s Cabinet stiffen the penalty for poaching, and an amendment to do so is pending for Parliament.

The current penalty is a minimum $400 fine or three months in prison.

Recently, however, judges in Dominica have been taking a creative approach — sentencing poachers to assist in turtle conservation efforts, a tactic which Watty claims has been effective in positively changing their outlook on the creatures.

Conservationists hope that this method of education will help others understand the importance of their endeavor, and spread the spirit of conservation.

“Hopefully, we’re bringing up a set of children who are more intelligent and understanding of the environment in which they live and how they fit into that environment,” Harris said.

New mosquito-borne virus hits Caribbean

From BVI BEACON

Public health officials are urging Virgin Islands residents to step up efforts to reduce mosquito breeding as a way to prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue fever, chikungunya and the Zika virus, which is new to the region.

Zika fever, which is not deadly, has spread from Africa to the Americas, with 15 cases confirmed in Brazil in April, Medical Officer Dr. Ronald Georges said in a press release issued Friday.

This month saw one case of Zika in the Dominican Republic, and the disease may travel to the VI as well, according to Dr. Georges.

The medical officer said common symptoms of Zika include mild headaches, skin rash, tiredness, red eyes, back pain and pain in the joints and muscles. He said there is no vaccine or other preventive treatment for the virus, but that patients are advised to get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and take anti-inflammatory medications.

Mosquito control

Chief Environmental Health Officer Carnel Smith said that even though the territory hasn’t had much rain this season, mosquitoes would have deposited their eggs in dry containers, leaving them to hatch when the containers eventually do fill with water.

“We are asking the community for their assistance in reducing our risk of future outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya and possibly the Zika virus, by remaining vigilant by inspecting your premises for mosquito breeding sites,” Mr. Smith said.

According to the press release, those who need assistance eliminating mosquito breeding sites around their property should contact the Environmental Health Division at 468-5110.

General cleanup to prevent mosquito breeding should include the removal of all water-holding receptacles such as old tyres, discarded buckets, plant pots or pet feeding dishes, plus larger items like abandoned boats and vehicles. Water tanks, wells, buckets and boats should all be covered, according to the release.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Zika fever is named after the Ugandan forest where it was first identified in 1947. The most recent major outbreak of Zika was in the Yap Islands in the Pacific in 2007. There were no deaths, although 180 people were suspected to have contracted the virus in that outbreak.

COLOGNE, Germany — Second-half substitute Bobby Wood scored in the waning minutes for the second time in six days to lift the United States to a 2-1 win over top-ranked Germany in an international friendly at RheinEnergieSTADION on Wednesday night.

Wood, who connected in the 90th minute of the Americans’ 4-3 come-from-behind victory at the Netherlands on Friday, received a Brad Evans feed from the right side. He turned on his marker, drilling a 22-yard shot that bounced past goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler and into the lower-left corner for the stunning game-winner, his second international goal.

The upset win was the USA’s first at Germany in five tries as the CONCACAF champion improved to 4W-0D-7L all-time against the World Cup holder. It was also was the Americans’ first triumph against a top-ranked team since defeating Spain 2-0 at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Though the Germans enjoyed a somewhat better run of play in the opening half, the score was 1-1 at the break.

The host drew first blood in the 12th minute. Mario Gotze, whose pass set up Mesut Ozil’s point-blank shot that was denied by USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan four minutes earlier, slotted home from 10-yards out off a Patrick Herrmann feed from the right side of the box.

With four minutes remaining in the half, the USA equalized. On the right, midfielder Michael Bradley delivered a splendid pass to the chest of a sprinting Mix Diskerud. The New York City FC midfielder chested the ball down in the left side of the box and then beat Zieler with a delightful effort, using the outside of his right foot to net from seven-yards out. Diskerud became the 12th American player to score an international goal this year.

The U.S. next meets Guatemala in a pre-CONCACAF Gold Cup match in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 3.

NOTES: In their last meeting, Germany defeated the U.S., 1-0, in the 2014 FIFA World Cup’s round of 16 … the last U.S. win against Germany came on June 2, 2013, in Washington, D.C., 4-3.
