It is not too late to donate and you don’t have to shave your head. Donations to the Heroes for Hannah fund can be made until the end of the year online at www.stbaldricks.org/events/heroesforhannah/.
Caribbean Airlines not seeing full benefit of drop in fuel price
From RJR News
Caribbean Airlines (CAL) has not fully benefited from the reduction in the price of oil.
A report in Trinidad & Tobago’s Guardian newspaper quotes CAL’s CEO, Michael DiLollo, as saying that, while airlines in general have seen benefits from the fall in prices and lowered fares, the situation with Caribbean Airlines is different.
He reportedly said CAL’s main shareholder, the Trinidad & Tobago Government, depends on energy as its main source of income and has been struggling amid the decline in the price of oil on the world market, which is down 17 per cent since the start of the year.
Mr. DiLollo said CAL has reacted by cutting costs and reducing wastage.

Watch: A blind woman schools people in judo and is the closest thing to Daredevil we’ve ever seen
Rio Paralympics 2016 Video

Just because you live with disabilities doesn’t mean you can’t be a world-class athlete. If you want proof of this, check out a new video posted by Rio 2016 that shows Paralympic athletes going into a gym and wowing everyone there with their incredible skills.
One athlete who really stands out is Lucia Teixeira, a Brazilian woman who is visually impaired and who also happens to be an amazing judo fighter. Despite her disability, she absolutely schools the competition in this Brazilian gymnasium.
“It was pretty awesome, she beat me up pretty bad,” says one man who grappled with Teixeira.
Other athletes featured in the video are Vinicius Rodrigues, a sprinter who has an artificial leg but who nonetheless runs at up to 15 miles per hour on a treadmill, and Luciano Dantas, a power lifter with dwarfism who manages to lift twice his own wait.
The video was made to promote the 2016 Paralympics that will take place next September in Rio. Check out the whole thing below.

King Kamehameha statute’s spear found on banks of channel
Associated Press From Business Inside
HONOLULU (AP) — Detectives have found the spear that was taken from King Kamehameha’s (cah-MEH’-ha-MEH’-ha) statute on Hawaii’s Big Island.
The top section of the spear held by a statute of the Hawaiian warrior was reported missing Sunday. Detectives returned to the scene to continue investigating Tuesday when they found the missing spear section in overgrowth on the banks of a channel behind the statute.
Police say the spear was forcibly removed from the lower staff section. Police will examine the spear segment for forensic evidence.
Kamehameha the First is known for uniting the Hawaiian islands in 1810. The statue in downtown Hilo near Wailoa (wy-LOH’-ah) State Park is one of several bearing his likeness.
On Kamehameha Day, celebrated June 11, his statues are ceremoniously draped with lei.
Switzerland to amend withholding tax regime
By Ulrika Lomas, From Tax-News.com, Brussels
On September 11, the Swiss Federal Council adopted a dispatch on the temporary retention of certain withholding tax (WHT) exemptions and the introduction of a new exemption for bail-in bonds.
In Switzerland, WHT is levied on interest, participation income, lottery winnings, and certain insurance benefits. It is collected from the debtor of the taxable item, in accordance with the debtor principle. It is refunded only if the corresponding income is declared. The Council had proposed a move to a paying agent system, under which the debtor would transfer the full gross amount to the paying agent (typically a bank).
In June, the Council said that while many of those who participated in its consultation acknowledged the advantages of the reforms, they opposed immediate implementation. As a result, it proposed an extension of the temporary tax exemption for contingent convertible bonds (CoCos) and write-off bonds, and the introduction of a similar exemption for bail-in bonds.
The Federal Council has now confirmed that the existing exemptions for CoCos and write-off bonds will be maintained for a limited period. A temporary exemption will be introduced for bonds that were approved by the Financial Market Supervisory Authority at the time of issue and that can be written down or converted into equity capital as part of restructuring procedures in the event of (threatened) insolvency (bail-in bonds).
The Council said these exemptions create a competitive tax environment and boost the stability of Switzerland’s financial center. It intends to discuss the proposed switch to a paying agent system again before the exemptions for CoCos, write-off bonds, and bail-in bonds expire. The Federal Department of Finance will submit a new proposal to the Federal Council after the upcoming referendum on the “Yes to the protection of privacy” initiative.
US$2.5M ganja bust in the Bahamas
From Jamaica Gleaner
MIAMI, CMC – The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency says a joint task force from Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) seized 2,842 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated wholesale value of over US$2.5 million during three separate law enforcement operations in The Bahamas last week.
CBP reports that over three separate nights, aircrews observed suspicious go-fast vessels transiting waters in the southeast Bahamas. It said surface and air assets were subsequently dispatched to pursue and apprehend the suspected smugglers.
In addition to the narcotics seized, CBP said two smuggling vessels and a vehicle were taken into custody, and a total of six suspects were arrested. The seized go-fast vessels and contraband were eventually escorted to Nassau, Bahamas, for further processing.

Max Beauvoir, supreme leader of Voodoo faith in Haiti, dies in Caribbean homeland
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS From The Republic Columbus, Indiana
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Voodoo chief Max Beauvoir has died in his homeland of Haiti, where the mixture of beliefs from West Africa and Catholicism is recognized as an official religion. He was 79.
A government statement said Beauvoir died Saturday in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince after an illness. The cause of death was not immediately known.
On his Twitter account, President Michel Martelly described Beauvoir’s death as a “great loss for the country.”
Born in 1936, Beauvoir was a biochemical engineer who earned degrees abroad and became a Voodoo priest when he returned to his Caribbean homeland in the 1970s.
He became Voodoo’s supreme chief, or national “ati,” in 2008 and led Haiti’s main priests’ organization. Beauvoir was widely known as a passionate guardian of the Voodoo faith, which has often been sensationalized and misunderstood.
Voodoo, or Vodou as preferred by Haitians, evolved in the 17th century when colonists brought slaves to Haiti from West Africa. Slaves forced to practice Catholicism adopted saints to coincide with African spirits. Followers believe in reincarnation, one God and a pantheon of spirits.
Many of Haiti’s 10 million people consider themselves followers of both Voodoo and Catholicism.

Still no pay for Myrie’s lawyers
IMAGE: Shanique Myrie has been paid, but not her attorneys. (FP)
The Jamaica Observer reported yesterday that the lawyers who successfully represented Myrie in her case against Barbados before the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) had not been paid.
That case ended almost two years ago when Myrie was awarded damages totalling about US$38 000 (BDS$76 000). She got her money eight months after the CCJ’s decision.
“Word reaching the Sunday Observer is that the Government of Barbados remains unmoved, and there is no indication as to when payment, in part or full, will be made to the attorneys, it emerged last week,” the paper reported. It did not indicate how much money the attorneys were owed. (Jamaica Observer/ES)

Where’s the penis? Kansas State fines itself $5,000 over bizarre halftime show
Kansas State University’s band is really bad at marching in the shape of the USS Enterprise and now it’s paying the price.
The university has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine after its marching band attempted to act out a battle between the famous starship from Star Trek and their rival University of Kansas Jayhawk mascot during its Saturday home-opener against South Dakota.
But the space-themed march looked like a penis entering a bird’s mouth to some — and that upset college sports bigwigs.
In addition to handing over $5,000 to the Big 12 Conference, the university said band director Frank Tracz will sit out the Nov. 28 game. School officials must also approve future halftime shows, according to the Associated Press. The fine was self-imposed after Big 12 authorities told the university the halftime show could be considered unethical and unsportsmanlike.
“At Saturday’s home football opener, Kansas State University fell short of its obligation to conduct itself in a consistent manner with the principles of sportsmanship,” Kirk Schulz, the university president, said in a statement released Tuesday, according to ESPN. “We look forward to our upcoming athletic contests with the expectation of sportsmanlike conduct from the entire K-State family.”
For his part, Tracz has called the phallic symbol a “misinterpretation” and apologized for the performance.
At least he has William Shatner, the actor who famously helmed the Enterprise as Captain Kirk, on his side – “I think it’s time for the @Big12Conference leaders to step down and get their eyes checked. What a travesty!”
Saint Joseph’s University settles softball hazing suits
By Gina Passarella, From The Legal Intelligencer
Saint Joseph’s University has settled the two lawsuits filed against it by former members of the women’s softball team who alleged a culture of “sexually charged” hazing within the team.
In seeking dismissal of the cases, Doe and Doe II v. Saint Joseph’s University, the parties informed the court Tuesday that the matters have settled. Terms of the settlements were not disclosed. The cases were filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and were being overseen by U.S. District Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg.
A call to the plaintiffs’ attorney, Derek Jokelson of Jokelson Law Group, was not immediately returned. Saint Joseph’s attorney, James Keller of Saul Ewing, said only that “the parties have resolved their differences.”
The joint motion seeking dismissal of both cases was filed a day before responses to the suits were due from Saint Joseph’s and co-defendant Terri Adams, the team’s coach.
In mid-May, a softball player at Saint Joseph’s University sued the school for Title IX violations stemming from allegations of a “sexually charged” hazing culture within the women’s softball team. Among other things, the plaintiff alleged to have been forced to simulate sexual intercourse in front of the whole team, recount her sexual experiences, plank in the middle of a road in the midst of traffic and be taped dancing so that it could later be posted on social media.
A second softball player sued Saint Joseph’s in early June with similar allegations. Among other things, the plaintiff claimed she had been forced to touch the naked, mayonnaise-covered buttocks of another player. The act was videotaped, that plaintiff alleged, and shared via social media among the team.
When word of the hazing allegations broke in the media earlier this year, Saint Joseph’s canceled the remaining few games of its 2014-15 season.
Doe alleged in the complaint that when word broke of the hazing, her teammates and coaches assumed she was the source and began retaliating against her. Doe withdrew from the university this year, leaving her softball scholarship behind. Doe had started as a freshman at the university in 2013 after being recruited to join the softball team.
Her complaint details an initiation week for freshman softball players that included letters calling them “low-level swine” and “scum” and referring to the team’s coaches in a sexual nature. Doe alleged she was repeatedly asked by her teammates about her sexual orientation and told she was gay and should come out of the closet. Teammates who associated with Doe were called lesbians, according to the complaint.
Doe II adopted in her complaint much of the factual allegations raised by Doe, and also raised new allegations she said came to light about Adams’ behavior since Doe had been filed. Doe II began as a freshman at Saint Joseph’s in the fall of 2014. She stopped playing with the team in the spring of 2015 after teammates allegedly accused Doe II of having a part in leaking the story to the press.
The plaintiffs alleged Adams and the university became aware of the hazing during the 2013-14 school year when one team member had to be hospitalized for intoxication. Instead of reporting the hazing, according to the complaint, Adams allegedly participated in it, calling Doe names. Doe II alleged that Adams called her “shady” when Doe II expressed her concerns to Adams.
Doe alleged the defendants violated Title IX by creating a hostile environment that condoned a “culture of pervasive sexual harassment.” She also alleged a count of retaliation under Title IX for the coaching staff’s intimidation and threats for raising awareness of the alleged harassment. The defendants were also sued for negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, breach of contract and promissory estoppel.
