Cayman Islands: New Geology Textbook to be Presented

WHAT:            A “Origin of Carbonate Sedimentary Rocks” textbook will be presented to Councillor Winston Connolly. This book will also be presented to all high schools taking part in Geology Week 2015 (Oct. 12-16).

WHO:                          Councillor Winston Connolly.

Water Authority Officials

WHEN:                        Monday, 12th October, 9.00 am

WHERE:                      The Water Authority Building, off Red Gate Road (going to

CUC).

BACKGROUND:          During the week of Monday, 12 to Friday, 16 October the Water Authority will organise “Geology Education Week” for the third consecutive year. Councillor Connolly will start the week by accepting a copy of the textbook “Origin of Carbonate Sedimentary Rocks”. Dr. Brian Jones, professor of geology at the University of Alberta, Canada, and his colleague Dr. Noel James, geology professor at Queen’s University, also in Canada published the text book through Wiley Press in August 2015. The Water Authority has a long and mutually beneficial working relationship with Dr. Jones. As part of Geology Week there will also be specific courses for high school teachers to teach them about the geology of the Cayman Islands. In addition Dr. Jones will give geology lessons to high school students. He will also present a public lecture organized through the National Trust. This book will be presented to all high schools that take part in Geology Week. It targets upper-level undergraduates but is a very useful reference for professionals. The book does not specifically target the geology of the Cayman Islands, but the extensive research that Dr. Jones has done in the Cayman Islands over the last 30 years, has contributed to the book. The book is a good reference on the geology of the Cayman Islands. http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1118652703.html

Seadrill hopes to see market turnaround in 2017

Reuters OSLO, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Offshore rig driller Seadrill is facing another two years in the doldrums but hopes the international rig market could turn around in 2017.

Rig rates have more than halved since the peak two to three years ago and in several cases are now below breakeven costs.

“2015 is gone, 2016 is ugly but what we see is that some oil companies are asking for extensions in 2017,” Chief Executive Per Wullf told the DNB investor conference in Oslo on Thursday.

“The oil price is decisive,” Wullf said.

But for the time being, the market remains depressed and Wullf said he was willing accept contracts at sharply lower rates than previously to secure them.

“It’s a fight for every contract”, Wullf said.

He said he could accept day rates down to $160,000-$180,000 on shorter contracts for drillships in the deepwater market which peaked around $600,000-$700,000 two to three years ago.

On longer contracts he said he could not accept a rate below $350,000-$400,000 per day.

Seadrill has a backlog of orders of around $14 billion and cash of $1.2 billion and expects to build up its cashpile to $1.6 billion next year.

In addition, the company has $2 billion of debt maturing in 2017.

Cuba, second tourist destination in the Caribbean

From Presna Latino

HAVANA._ The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) named Cuba the second leading tourist destination in the Caribbean in the first quarter of 2015, only preceded by the Dominican Republic, the local press reported.

The difference in the number of tourist arrivals recorded by the two countries is getting smaller. According to the Granma Daily, Cuba welcomed 3.1 million visitors in 2014 while the Dominican Republican received around 5.1 million, whereas in the first quarter of this year, 1,135,610 tourists visited Cuba and 1,499,402 the Dominican Republic.

According to official estimates, Canada was the number one issuing market of tourists to Cuba from January to March this year, with 551,360 visitors. This flow may rise considerably in the future resulting from the agreements recently signed by the two countries to improve air connections and increase the frequency of flights.

Meanwhile, the CTO believes this rising trend could negatively affect Puerto Rico, because, while the number of tourist arrivals to Cuba grew by 15 percent in the first quarter of this year, Puerto RicoâÖs only increased by a mere 0.3 percent.

The easing of travel restrictions to Cuba for U.S. citizens may also trigger the alarm for the Puerto Rican tourism industry because, having been a market so far forbidden for U.S. tourists, the Cuban destination could become a very strong competitor.

Since last December, the interest in Cuba as a tourist destination has grown all over the world, as corroborated by the increase in the number of flights by different airlines, the resumption of others or the launching of new air routes.

With the objective of maintaining that growth rate in the tourism industry, Cuba is adding more than 3,000 rooms to its largest tourist resorts, while encouraging the participation of the non-state sector in the offers promoted by travel agencies.

The number of tourist arrivals in the Caribbean region grew by six percent from January to April this year, and a similar growth rate is expected for the rest of the year, according to the CTO.

In the first four months of 2015, the Caribbean islands welcomed a total of 7.9 million tourists, mostly from the United States and Canada, said the CTO chairman Richard Sealy.

Heineken boosts Caribbean, Malaysian presence

From Free Malaysia Today

As majority owner, Heineken will be able to drive the investment and strategic direction of the operating companies in Jamaica and Malaysia.

Heineken-Experience

THE HAGUE: Dutch beer giant Heineken Wednesday announced a deal worth 696 million euros ($780 million) with the world’s biggest distiller, Diageo, to boost its presence in the Caribbean and Malaysia.

Heineken has taken control of the Jamaican company Desnoes & Geddes, acquiring Diageo’s 57.9 percent stake.

The Dutch brewer now holds 73.3 percent of the Jamaican company, which produces Red Stripe and Dragon beers.

“Heineken will in due course make a mandatory offer for all shares of D&G not already owned by Heineken,” it said in a statement.

The company has also won full control of GAPL, which has a majority stake in the Malaysian brewer GAB, producers of such beers as Tiger, Anchor and Malta.

GAPL also holds the license to distribute Guinness and ABC Stout in Singapore.

Heineken bought Diageo’s shareholding of just under 50 percent of GAPL to gain 100 percent control of the company.

“As majority owner, Heineken will be able to drive the investment and strategic direction of the operating companies in Jamaica and Malaysia,” it said.

“The Caribbean and Southeast Asia are strategically important,” the company added.

Meanwhile, the Dutch brewer said it had sold its 20 percent stake in Guinness Ghana Breweries to Diageo, giving the British company more than a 70 percent share of the Ghanian company.

Diageo, which also makes Johnnie Walker whisky and Smirnoff vodka, is one of the world’s largest producer of spirits.

GFSC sets out approach to EIF Director thematic review

From Your Gibralta TV

The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC) has today published a Policy Statement and accompanying paper setting out its approach to the thematic review of EIF Directors.

The Statement sets out the GFSC’s expectations of the approach Directors of Experienced Investor Funds (EIFs) should take to their role and responsibilities as Directors. The Paper explains what directors can expect from the thematic review and the broader outcomes the GFSC aims to have achieved at the conclusion of the review.

Samantha Barrass, CEO, is today giving a speech at the Gibraltar Association of Compliance Officers’ Risk Awareness Week, where she will cover the risks that poor standards can pose to consumers, the financial services sector and to the jurisdiction if EIF Directors do not carry out their duties properly. Mrs. Barrass will explain how the GFSC’s work will focus on making sure that all directors conduct the role effectively and competently, supporting a well-controlled environment for EIFs activities.

Commenting on the review, Mrs. Barrass notes: “The purpose of this review is to work towards reducing the risks that arise from poor conduct by some EIF Directors. We are clearly setting out our expectations of the approach EIF Directors should take to their responsibilities and will be reviewing EIF Directors’ compliance with those standards. The review represents a focused use of our resources towards effectively and efficiently carrying out our regulatory responsibilities and strategic objectives”.
