iNews was right. Julianna has resigned from the UDP

Prem-Hon.-Juliana-O’Connor-Connolly-1--300x185iNews Cayman published some days ago that Cayman Islands premier, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, had resigned from the United Democratic Party (UDP), despite other media houses saying she hadn’t.

At Tuesday’s (8) Government press briefing she confirmed she was no longer a member of the UDP as she had resigned. “You have heard me directly saying it to you,” she said with a smile.

She elaborated a little by explaining why she hadn’t immediately resigned with her other four colleagues, saying the situation was very different in Cayman Brac to what it was on Grand Cayman. The other members all had faced disciplinary action if they hadn’t resigned following notice from the various district committees, something she did not face from her own Brac committee.

The premier said, her committee was delighted to have a Brac MLA as premier, but she had nevertheless formally resigned from the UDP.

“I was not ousted,” she said. “I voluntarily withdrew.”

She also pointed out that it takes a little longer to finalise matters for her as she had been very busy here on Grand Cayman and she had to find time to visit Cayman Brac and deal with the resignation matter.

“There was no ulterior motive in my not resigning from the UDP at the same time as the other members,” she said. “We are united.”
