Cayman Islands: Interdiction of drug canoe, three men arrested and charged, 2 March
On Friday 2 March, just after 12AM, the Joint Marine Unit, while on border protection patrol, came upon a canoe with three men on board.
The men tried to evade capture by speeding off; however, they were later spotted by the Air Operations Unit who saw the men throwing packages overboard. Following a short pursuit, officers aboard the JMU vessel intercepted the canoe and detained the men. A search of the area was conducted and several packages containing ganja were recovered. The three men were arrested for suspicion of illegal landing and suspicion of importation of ganja.
During a search of the packages, a .38 caliber revolver handgun and 49 rounds of .38 caliber ammunition was found. Pictures of the gun and ammunition are attached.
The men, aged 58, 41 and 37, all Jamaican nationals, were charged with Being Concerned in the Importation of Ganja and Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply and are appearing in court today, Monday, 5 March.
