International Human Rights Day 2012

Today, 10 December, 2012, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) joins the world-wide celebration of International Human Rights Day. This year marks the 64th anniversary of the ratification of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  The United Nations’ General Assembly voted to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December, 1948. This Declaration describes justice, equality and dignity as basic human rights of every man, woman and child. It states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights;” and that, “the inherent dignity of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” Although the Declaration is not legally binding, the principles are supported by the international community, including the Cayman Islands.

As an institution supporting democracy, the HRC believes in the principle that human rights are inherent to all people, without discrimination of nationality, ethnic origin, sex, religion or any other status. In addition, the Commission supports the notion that there are universal rights and fundamental freedoms which governments are obligated to secure for all persons in the country.

In light of the recent implementation of the Bill of Rights, Freedoms, and Responsibilities, the Commission urges the country to remain dedicated to the cause of promoting, protecting, and preserving human rights.  We urge all persons to peacefully and democratically assist in the campaign of raising awareness for human rights, observing human rights principles, and working to hold the Government and public officials accountable for infringements of human rights. For this to be successful, we encourage everyone to learn more about your human rights and the responsibilities that come with fully exercising those rights.

The Human Rights Commission also encourages everyone to participate in this year’s global observance and to reflect on the meaning, importance, and need for human rights in the Cayman Islands.  In our efforts to promote, protect, and preserve human rights in the Cayman Islands, the HRC urges the public to recognise and honour the significant contributions of those persons who have defended human rights in their daily lives for the benefit of all of us.
