From November 11th to 22nd, all eyes will be on Baku (Azerbaijan) for the highly anticipated United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29. The conference is regarded as a decisive stage for the voices of island communities to be heard, to seek solidarity and cooperation from larger nations and to secure climate finance for adaptation and resilience efforts.
This year’s Island Voices platform will comprise 3 key areas. One of them will be an online Daily Bulletins, in which we will be reporting exclusive insights received directly from the COP29 Presidency, live interviews and island related news from the ground. Moreover, a calendar of all island events will be shared to make sure the relevant stakeholders can attend and meet each other. Stay tuned for updates if you would like to submit your island event to our calendar.
Island Innovation will also have 2 big impacts on the ground:
- The Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy Delegation: We are taking 8 participants from the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy, a fully-funded program by the Open Society Foundations, to attend COP29 in Baku. They will serve as envoys for their island communities.
- Side events: Starting from next week and throughout COP29, the Island Innovation team will be organising in-person and virtual side events to highlight key island-related topics, and engage with experts on pressing climate challenges. The different sessions will offer opportunities to hear from island leaders, policymakers, NGO professionals and innovators on what they hope to achieve at COP, their communities’ impact, and the role island stakeholders will play in global climate negotiations.
Our first event is virtual, and will take place next Thursday, October 31st, at 09:00 AM New York, 13:00 PM London, 00:00 AM Sydney (next day). Register to participate!
