IOC Executive Board proposes Tony Estanguet for election as IOC Member at the 144th Session in Greece
I07 January 2025 – Through a vote by correspondence, the Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the nomination of Tony Estanguet (46), three-time Olympic champion in canoeing, for election as an IOC Member at the 144th IOC Session, which will take place in Greece from 18 to 21 March 2025. Mr Estanguet was the President of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee.
Following the recommendation of the IOC Members Election Commission, Mr Estanguet will be proposed as an Independent Individual. The nomination is possible in accordance with Rule 16.1.1. of the Olympic Charter. This rule allows for up to seven IOC Members to be elected in special cases without a nationality or National Olympic Committee (NOC) requirement.
This decision follows the proposals made at the EB meeting held in December, during which the IOC EB agreed to propose the following to the 144th IOC Session:
*the re-election of 10 IOC Members within the age limit,
* the extension of the term of office for one Member,
*a change of status for two Members, and
*the election of two Members as Honorary Members.
