Island Heritage insures first electric car in the Cayman Islands
When James O’Neill received his car insurance policy from Island Heritage Insurance on 29 September 2012 it was a moment years in the making. Earlier this month, after years of lobbying on the part of Cayman Automotive’s John Felder and other electric car advocates, the Cayman Islands Government passed the revised Traffic Law to allow residents to register and insure their electric vehicles.
Thanks to a partnership between Cayman Automotive Leasing and Island Heritage, as the Insurer of Choice for electric cars in Cayman, and after months of waiting, Mr. O’Neill was the first person to be able to legally drive his electric car, a Wheego Life, on Cayman’s roads.
“Just as important as legalising electric vehicles in the Cayman Islands was having the proper insurance coverage,” commented Mr. O’Neill. “I was impressed by Island Heritage’s ability to see where the future is going with electric vehicles and allowing individuals the ability to protect their assets.”
Island Heritage’s Chief Underwriting Officer Annette Jim said that Island Heritage Insurance was proud to partner with John Felder as the Insurer of Choice for electric vehicles in Cayman.
“As a Cayman Islands based company, with operations throughout the Caribbean, we are committed to the communities we serve, and see preserving their environment as a vital part of that commitment. Mr. Felder has strong ties within the Cayman Islands community and has been integral in bringing electric cars to the Caribbean. We are proud to partner with him to be the insurer of choice for Cayman Automotive Leasing and electric vehicles in Cayman. This partnership reaffirms Island Heritage’s commitment to green technology and ensures that we are on the cutting edge of the auto insurance market in the Caribbean,” said Mrs. Jim.
The Wheego Life, one of the many electric car models available for purchase from Cayman Automotive, provides environmentally conscious drivers with an alternative to traditional fuel run vehicles. With the ability to run up to 100 miles on a single charge and a planned network of 10 charging stations on Grand Cayman, drivers can be assured that they will never be too far from a charging station.
Cayman Automotive’s John Felder said, “Once the new Traffic Law was approved to allow electric vehicles to be used on public roads in the Cayman Islands, I also needed an insurance company to insure the electric vehicles. I offer my sincere gratitude to Island Heritage for their support, because without insurance the vehicles could never have been licensed or registered.”
Island Heritage is able to insure electric vehicles of varying sizes and voltage. For more information about insuring your electric vehicle contact Island Heritage Insurance at +345 949 7280.
