Jamaica’s Under-16 netballers depart Thursday for Jean Pierre Caribbean Championships
Jamaica’s Under-16 netball team is to leave the island on Thursday for Barbados where they will compete in the Jean Pierre Caribbean Championships.
The team comprises of Lori Daley, Christal Holness, Zandria Cohen, Kamia Daley, Denay Thomas, Britney-Ann Elliott, Felicia Smith, Latanya Wilson, Shadine Bartley, Kimone Shaw, Abigale Sutherland, and Brittany Morgan.
They attended church on Sunday, after which they were feted at the Netball House in Kingston.
Team sponsor Scotiabank presented the members warm-up gear, bags to carry the gear, water bottles and towels.
Shelley Sykes-Coley, the bank’s sponsorship manager said Scotiabank continues to support netball as it continues to be the number-one sport for females in Jamaica and helps to develop well-rounded individuals.
Meanwhile, President Dr Paula Daley-Morris lauded her team for their preparation for the championships and reminded the team members that they follow a very successful tradition of winning the championships, having won it 10 times before and only losing it once.
Dr Daley-Morris said Winston Nevers, who helped to prepare the team for the competition, had been given the opportunity to travel with the team as assistant coach. She said it was only fair to involve him at this time as he had been knocking on the door for a long time.
Head coach Marvette Anderson was upbeat about the team’s chances of winning the championship again as they did the last time they competed in 2014. She admitted that the preparation time was short but said that it was intensive and that the team was still expected to come away with the important trophies.
Captain Abigale Sutherland, who plays centre, was confident that her team can bring home the overall championship trophy and make Jamaica proud.
