A group of John Gray High School kids were busy raising funds with a carwash in the Wendy’s parking lot, West Bay road, for their school’s Business Club trip scheduled for June next year.

“Each year we raise funds to take the students away to a student conference called Future Business Leaders of America which is being held in San Antonio, Texas,” said Patricia Forbes, Business Club Advisor at the school.

“We are doing this car wash to pay for our conference fees which cost $100 for each child, and to pay for the hotel, which usually runs to about $3,000, and to pay for travel insurance for students. If there is any extra money we put it towards the airline tickets,” Ms Forbes continued.

We do other fundraisers besides the car wash, such as a talent show, snack sales, and we also do catalogue sales.

Describing the Business Club’s aims, Ms Forbes said:

“Each week the students meet for about half an hour, basically to build teamwork and leadership skills.

“The purpose of the Business Club is that students can network and become more involved in all aspects of business.

“A lot of them would like to go to this conference we are raising funds for – they not only network at that conference but they participate in competitive activities such as word processing exams, accounting exams and so on against the students in the US. We’ve never won, but we hope that one of these years we will win.”
