Jim Fregosi hospitalized in Cayman Islands after stroke

Former manager and shortstop Jim Fregosi had a stroke while on a Major League Baseball alumni cruise in the Caribbean and was taken to a hospital in the Cayman Islands. Adam Rubin of ESPN reported the news first Wednesday.
Fregosi’s family, Rubin writes, is trying to arrange to move him from the Caymans to a hospital in the United States. Since this past Saturday, he had been cruising with other former major leaguers Rudy May, Stan Bahnsen, Tony Taylor and Amos Otis. It’s a similar concept to, albeit a different boat than, the cruise Earl Weaver was on 13 months ago when he suffered a heart attack and died.
Fregosi, 71, is an adviser to Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren.
Fregosi probably is best known for being manager of the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies, one of the more colorful World Series teams in history. But he was an early superstar with the Los Angeles Angels in the 1960s and he took over as the team’s manager at age 36 in 1978. He managed them to the AL West title a season later.
A six-time All-Star, Fregosi played 18 seasons in the majors with the Angels, Mets, Rangers and Pirates, and won 1,028 games as manager for the Angels, White Sox, Phillies and Blue Jays.
